Got a carter bbd 2 barrel i rebuilt last week and it runs an idles good now. Only problem is the choke won't fully open when it's warmed up. It almost gets there but hangs up on the last part of the fast idle cam and won't go down to curb idle. It's one of those chokes that sits inside the intake manifold. Would a new bi-metallic spring fix the issue or is there another way to adjust it?

It's on my 69 Satellite 318. I can't be sure it's the original carb though. Looks just like this one.

You probably have a thermostat that can be adjusted by loosening a nut at the coil with L and R markings for a leaner or richer setting. Adjust it cold to make sure the choke closes enough and that it fully opens hot as well.

It's a divorced choke like in the photo below housed in the intake manifold. I'm guessing the spring won't expanded enough to push the choke plate open all the way but wanted to get opinions before spending money for a new one.

How hot is the choke well getting. Back in the day I pulled several intakes off to chisel out the carbon which would form in the cross over passage. It could easily, totally plug the passage. Usually a valve stem seal replacement would be recommended.

Uncle Tony just did a video.

I'll have to look into that. Need to get one of those thermometers. It does partially open so it's getting some heat. Just doesn't open quite enough to get off the fast idle cam once i bump the gas pedal after it's warmed up. I don't know the history of the engine. Could be clogged up or even blocked for all i know.

Can you bend the arm to adjust the length? Or look at the end with the coil, there should be an adjustment.

It doesn't look like the rod length can be adjusted. Rod is pretty straight with a slight dog leg in it. I'll pull the choke sometime this week and take a look if there's any adjustment.

Just feel the cross over with your finger, quickly.

Pulled the choke and was able to clock the spring slightly looser but still enough to shut the choke when cold. After it warmed up for a good while, i bumped the gas pedal and this time it was able to get off the fast idle cam down to curb idle which it wasn't able to do before. It would get to the edge of the cam but never drop down to curb idle. The choke still wasn't fully open though. Maybe 75%. The center part of the intake and the crossover areas where the choke is housed stayed cool for a long time. After about 1/2 an hour of running it finally warmed up and was open about 95%. So i'm guessing it the residual heat finally warmed up the chock enough to get it open most of the way. Sounds like the crossover must be clogged or blocked. I can live with it for now.
