I have a 67 coronet RT 440 4spd with a carter afb that has been giving me fits. It's been rebuilt, tried several jet sizes, metering rods and just can't get it to perform right. I called Edelbrock and was pointed toward their model # 1411 which is a 750 cfm electric choke unit. Sounded good to me but the problem is I want to use my STOCK air cleaner. The edelbrock has a much larger top end so the base plate of the aircleaner won't fit. Any suggestions? Does anyone make an adapter for the use of a stock air cleaner? Thanks in advance.

An adapter mught work, but also might raise the air cleaner too high. There is very little room under the hood pad. If I don't screw my air cleaner down till it crushes a little, the top will rub the hood pad.

You may also find a base plate with both inner and outer diameters correct. It may take a little experimenting.

Good luck.

Not to sound insulting, but I find it hard to believe you can't get the correct one to work. Have you considered ultra sonic cleaning?

thats strange?original afb's and the new carters should have the same size air horns.are you sure the old carb is an afb?

The original AFB 4BBL carb had a small air horn. Contrary to popular belief, the "New" Eddy Carb's are NOT AFB style air horns, they more resemble the AVS style Carter, which has the typical Holley size air horn...

Edelbrock carbs are 5 1/8 inches in diameter at the top end and my carter afb is like 4 5/8. I just was wondering if anyone replaced their carter with a newer model edelbrock and found a way to make the stock air cleaner fit.

Yes, there used to be a company that made the little Plastic adapters. Could go down or up in size. I only have a couple left, but haven't seen them in a while.

could you use a different base on your air cleaner, say from another cleaner?as long as the outside dia is the same it should work.i have also cut air cleaner bases and manufactured new sheetmetal to fit air horns, but that was mostly to make dominators look like stock fitment.you guys are correct,i was thinking of the avs not the afb for sizing, sorry.

I thought about cutting the original base but that is a little drastic. I really don't want to alter the original. I'm most likely going to manufacture an adapter keeping in mind the hood clearance is pretty minimul. Thanks.

Adapters are fine for fitting a large diameter air cleaner base to a smaller carb, but you want to do the opposite. I don't think you'll find one that doesn't push the air cleaner a lot higher than the stock position.

Do you think that putting a smaller diameter air cleaner base on a larger carb air horn will want to restrict the air flow some? Will that carb perform properly?

I use proform carbs on all My cars now...great price..lots of features...
