Hey guys! I just replaced my 4:30 spool with a 3:55 posi. When I install my Moser axles with what I'm assuming are green bearings, the axles are hitting in the middle. If I tighten up one side, it is actually pushing the other axle out! Is that steel plate in the middle of the center section supposed to come out? If so, how do I get it out? Thanks for your help. Chris.

I believe that steel spacer needs to come out with green bearings if I remember reading correctly. I kept the original style tapered rollers but do recall that conversation when I was researching the "green" bearings.

Take out the spacer in the sure grip and will be right in the world.

Okay. I see the spacer, but I don't know how the bast*** comes out...
I do own large hammers, but I usually reserve those for working on my Harley.

The "steel plate" you are referring to is actually made up of two pieces with a small diameter hole thru both. They are held together with a small rolled pin. Drive the pin out to remove them. (the pin runs parallel with the axles)

Okay... I looked at the spacer and it appears to be about 2 or 3 inches thick. I don't see any hole in it at all, but will look at it better tomorrow. I just talked to somebody who says he has done a thousand of these rears and he told me that the spacer on this rear end doesn't come out and that I will have to cut a small piece off of each axle to make it work. He told me how to figure out the amount to cut and said it shouldn't be more than about an eighth inch or so off of each axle. Does this sound right?

I assumed you have a early Spicer SureGrip Posi. If yours looks like this pic my instructions are correct. Look in thru the side gears(where the axle slides in) you should see a button about 3/4" diameter with about a 1/8" hole in the center. That is where the pin is.

Couldn't leave you hanging. Went to garage and took another pic. If you have a Spicer SureGrip you should see this. If you can't see pin hole it could be filled with gunk.Pin.JPG

Great posts, sam. I noticed you were new to the forum. Welcome, thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Dont cut your axles!
The sure grip units have the center spacer in them as already stated......... You must remove the spacer "button" before installing axles with green bearing... This is common practice, and outlined somewhere in one of the manufactures conversion instructions.....
As a matter of fact, it is common for them to be missing from used center sections. Over years of abuse, the retaining pins break, and the button will stick to the end of an axle shaft when removing and fall down into the housing, or outside of the housing all together.
My used 4.10 sure grip center section had its button missing, so green bearings were right in order for me... Everything went smooth as silk for the conversion.
BTW,,,, what did you do with the spool and 4.30's?

Mine looks different than that somehow. I can't seem to post a picture from my iPad, but I will look at it again when I get home later today. Mine looks solid on one end and has a small dimple on the other end. Doesn't look like a roll pin by any means, but I could definitely be wrong. I sure don't want to have to cut two brand new axles! Oh... And I sold the spool with the 4:30's in it.

Mine still look different than that... Do I have some "other" kind of center section?
I will be home inc couple of hours and will research this further. Thanks!

Is your Posi made in two pieces and bolted together like the one in my pic, or is it all one piece?

Well, I still can't upload pictures, but I do see that my center section is one piece and there does not appear to be any kind of pin in the middle of the spacer. I'm lost here.

I can email my pictures to anybody who is willing to help me here!! That would be no problem.

I believe that's it. And from what I've read on this forum and on other forums here on the good old World Wide Web, this type of pumpkin must be disassembled to remove the spacer. The only other option is to shorten the axles slightly.
