Personally I don’t think it’s needed. Back when I was racing with the high stall converters with back to back rounds the trans never did over heat with just the cooler attached in front of radiator. A temp sender in the pan will show what will work.Late to the party but if you run aftermarket cooler will you also going to run a fan on it also.
Old trick with the stock-super stock racers was to have a by-pass so trans fluid didn’t go to cooler till the fluid got hot for the pass (setting in line for hours trans would be dead cold) so what you say sounds reasonable.If you plan on driving during the winter it's a good idea to run a radiator cooler Downstream of the auxiliary cooler to put some heat into the oil. The water temp of the engine will help put some heat into it. It's a good idea to have your trans fluid at operating temperature too....
