Column shift reverse manual valve body or regular pattern auto shift?

You start the burn out in low then shift to second and exit the water box in second.

This ^^^^^^^

What you don't want to happen is hookin up soon as it shifts into 2nd. That's when bad stuff happens. Long as you do like up there ^^^^^^ you're all good. Even with no low band apply. Low band apply I always said was kinda for dummies. As long as you KNOW to pull outta the bleach box still spinnin in 2nd, you're good.

one last one for us novices - if I start the burn out in Low and with my foot on the brake let off the gas in Low without ever shifting into 2nd, is that also bad news? I'm still aways away from the car being ready for track time, but just curious?

I'd say yes. Any abrupt changes in driveline speed while in 1st may be an issue.

Now if they made a reverse pattern auto that would be the ticket. Why don't they?

Getting a few quick posts in before I head to work.
Yeah I heard that some of the factory mid 60s cars had that from the factory. In speaking with John Cope of cope racing yesterday, he told me the reverse manual valve body makes the tranny stronger and longer lasting, as well as no need for a kick down cable assembly to work with my aftermarket intake and carb setup.

So if I got the reverse manual valve body and a year later change my mind, can I keep the trans and just swap the valve body and kick down linkage to go back to full auto or is it trans specific?

Yes you can just switch out the Valve Bodies, quick job. Not sure about the kickdown linkage we have an aftermarket cable deal.

I thought about with my Coronet, but I'm goin with a floor shifter. I've never done a reverse valve body on the column, but I think it would be cool. You would certainly remove the possibility of shifting into neutral.
We have a column shift in our 68 Coronet RT bench seat car, we cruise and race, so we want to keep it as is. We installed a Cheetah Reverse Pattern Manual Valve Body a few weeks ago and immediately cut 3 tenths off our ET. No mush in those shifts now, and shifting the car manually is not a problem at all.

Driving in the city we use first and second in the neighbourhoods, and shift into 3 for major roads. It slows and cruises to a stop sign nicely in third, and after stopping we put it into first. Very drivable. Big thing to remember, though, is not to shift into Reverse until the car is actually stopped, or big $$ damage we've been warned.

The only actual problem we have had is mental: looking at the D on the column shift indicator and trying to think 1. I'm hoping we can find a reverse pattern sticker on the 'net somewhere, or decal. If anyone has seen one advertised please let me know! For now we'll stick something on ourselves to help us learn to shift backwards. :)

The 67 factory super stock cars had reverse pattern valve bodies and had the indicator labeled like you want. It seems like Direct Connection had the reverse pattern indicator for sale way back when, but good luck finding it now.

The OP is dead now.

Thanks alot! I heard that some "factory cars" came with them, now I know which ones! I tried emailing a guy mentioned on BBodiesOnly who apparently made them, but like the original posts here, he could be dead or almost there..... I guess. :)

No worries, i was going to comment too, as i daily-drove a bench seat reverse full manual column shift runner for years. Then i noticed the date. Figured my input might be a little late .
