Anyone have any experience with the Comp .564" lift cam kit? Seems to be everything I want in a kit, lifters, springs, the works, takes my guess work out of it.

I have a link...

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/cca-k21-229-4?seid=srese1&gclid=CJOln82CvMECFYLyMgod8xUAHw

I plan on a 512 stroker with 88cc Performer RPM heads, six pack intake set, a mild street build, not going for all out race, but 440 source claims that this cam is very drivable, but comes alive once you mash the gas, I don't want a cam that is happiest at 10,000 rpm ya know.

However I guess my main concern is that they complain about the 1 bolt cam gear arrangement vs. the 3 bolt timing gear, but I assume Comp wouldnt make this available for sale if the cam timing gear bolt was breaking all the time, is this something I should be worrying about or should I be special ordering the 3 bolt timing gear cam?

I'd be interested if anyone has any videos or experience with this cam in their big block.

Many thanks.

The kit comes with the single bolt link belt timing chain. It's not even a roller chain.

id get a 3 bolt cam for sure.
i just bought the cam one size smaller than that one, in a three bolt.

i did a 500 like 12 yrs ago with the Eldo heads, and 850 demon street carb.

i had a .509 style Hughes cam in it, cam was too small, carb wasnt large enough.

and i did the math wrong and ended up with a 11.6 to one engine, it was a pump gas disaster.

i sold the car to a friend who put a .620 mech. cam in it, and had the carb reworked and added the Victor intake, it was a complete ANIMAL! over 600 lbs of torque at 3400 rpms.

so this time im just sticking with a 10 to 1 446 with the 440 source heads and 850 ultra carb.

for sure a 512 will be an beast, maybe more that youll like if you like to cruise alot.

i know i sound like a twat-waffle, but a properly prepped 500 is no joke!

I did consider just putting in fresh pistons to bring the compression up, doing the same setup but not a stroker, read on here that the 6 pack set up runs around 920-930 cfm or something, so it was quite rich on a 440 but i figured a 512 it would be fine with considering the ideal carb for that is something in the 850-950 range.

Also considered that the .564 cam would be plenty and offered what I was looking for, considering the other cams i was looking at were quite docile in comparison, wasnt sure if i wanted to run a cam past .600" lift in a street car, probably not going to see the strip.

I should also consider using the word consider less..... just realized that lol

Don't bother buying a kit from comp. It will come with locks that don't work with aluminum heads and springs that are too weak for the cam they come with anyway. Ask someone else to spec the springs for you.

the thing you have to watch with using 6-packs, is that there is no adjustability in the air bleeds in the carbs, you cant jet the outboards (i know there are kits available)...extra cost. and hassle. (im against modding six packs if you cant tell)...they work so good stock with the right set up.

thats why im going with the Holley HP ultra.

my last stroker had off idle lean issues, and surging at because i need larger emulsion bleeds. it really took the fun out of it. i could jet for full throttle no problem, but drivabiltiy sucked.

I did see a guy modify a 500 cfm 2bbl for the center carb that he claimed worked great on his stroker.

Right setup would be stock displacement with eddy heads?

You mean these adjustable air bleeds? The right has the lead plug popped off exposing the needle, left one still has it.

those are the mixture screws. the bleeds are the tiny holes in the air horn of the carb.

the last 440 i did was a .030 over so a 446, i used a MP repop six pack with the 71 middle carb, an late model 452 heads with .030 milled off the bottom and i had 2.14 intake valves installed. i chose a Comp cam XE268 hydraulic cam, man that was a great setup! loads of torque! great idle, i used OE HP manifolds and TTI 3.0 full exhaust.

the engine didnt have quite the idle "tone" the most of use prefer, but it was the perfect cruise night engine.

these are the kill bleeds that some times need to be messed with the get the large displacement and big car engines to run like a Swiss watch.

I had that 268 cam in one of my old street RR's basically a 440 six pak short block with single 750 holley RPM intake headers with a narrowed 8 3/4 with 3.91's That thing would beat everything from a stop light! Just ran out of steam at 5500, but got there in a hurry! Stock idle

I've heard of vendors offering metering plates for the 6 pack to get them tuned? Or dare I say the words.... Fuel injection. Six pack also offered for that but it is quite expensive. I'll tune carbs to get it right but just gotta make sure that it would be able to handle a stroker, just like them a lot better, but like I said I don't mind doing stock displacement 440 if it means it would run better on the carbs, I'd just cam it out lol, still planning on RPM heads nothing too extreme

You can order the parts straight from Comp Cams and tailor the combo more to your needs/wants. For example the comp number is K 21 -229-4 which is single bolt. Order the K 23-229-4 and it would be a 3 bolt type. As far as duration goes, that looks like a good one to me.

I am using the 509 cam in my 451, which has 292 adv duration which works great for me. Plenty of low end and throttle response. Rather lumpy idle. Use alot of initial timing advance. Like 18 to 20.
