Interesting stuff,Rich. Wouldn't you just love to see the maintenance expense reports to see if they jive with the official report about how expensive it was to maintain. I'm also curious as to why the Tupelov was grounded after only one-albeit doomed-flight. Did the Russians know something more about any inherent flaws in the design, and pulled the plug to cut their potential losses? Hmmm...lots more to this story.

I know there's some aviation folks out there who would have an informed opinion on this.

Just like the conspiracy theory the govt blew up the trade centers....
The gas tank on that plane was an issue long before that accident. There were other incidents with it. There was a person on the ground who felt the heat from the fire as it passed over head. There was no way that plane was making it safely back anywhere. The wing itself was disintegrating from the heat.
RIP to all those who lost their lives.

Much of what I've read about the Concorde was negative as far as design and construction quality was concerned. General airworthiness was an issue as the aircraft could be difficult to fly at low speed and altitude. It could be very unforgiving of small pilot errors that normally wouldn't be a problem in a sub-sonic airliner. I've always wondered if Boeing had built It's SST if it would have been a much better aircraft. We'll never know.

The similar military XB70 also had a VERY short history.

Wasn't it built by the French ??, not the best choice for commercial aviation... In my opinion anyway, hell they build crappy cars, what would make anyone think they could build a quality Airliner, that goes into super-sonic air speeds... I know I wouldn't...

when I was young I thought they were cool because they were so fast...LOL...

I think they were built in France by a partnership of French and British companies with government support. The Brits built some nice cars like Rolls and Bentley, but the reliability of the rest of their stuff can leave you on foot. At least when their cars crap out you can just roll off to the side of the road. With their aircraft, that's not an option.

Thanks that's kind of what I remember too... I'm not a big fan of the French cars, as if you couldn't tell... I've had a few British cars, Jags, MG's & Triumphs, none of the Lucas wiring is worth a 2 nickles either...

yes it was a collaboration and govt funded, the cost was astronomical and I think it didn't even come close to breaking even

Diddn't Desault build a decent aircraft?
