Console looks crooked even though it's lined up per my sample

I've posted about this project before but I'm further along. I have a second floor example to go from but when I line my bracket up to that example the console seems to lean toward the driver's side. But if I try to move it "up the hill" nothing lines up well and it'll start to teeter on the shifter mechanism.
Is this just how they are?

cut the brackets loose, attach them to the console......set the console where you like it and tack the brackets to the hump

or simply use some type of shims to correct it

The console just "teeters" on those brackets and does not really fit the floor as you would imagine (I have 2 E bodies currently). I agree with attaching the brackets to the console and then aligning it.

I did try with the brackets attached to the console and putting it where it looked right had the center bracket teetering on the shifter and quite a bit of the front boot exposed.
It's not just the console but the shifter itself not straight up and down.
Is it common to need shims under the bracket when it didn't require that before I buzzed then off the floor?

I would cut the "low" side of the bracket(s). Shim the cut bracket with metal and then weld it.

I kept tweaking and I think I got it all spot welded in ok. A little straighter and the holes line up and the shifter moves through all the gears

50 years ago you get in your cool car and never notice, or care about the console being a little crooked. 50 years later you restore your car as best you can........ that's the time you discover how imperfect it is/was. It's all part of the fun :D

No doubt. I converted my fury 25 years ago and every time I look in the back window it bugs me how cockeyed it is!
