cooling system pressure

i was wondering what the system pressure is on the cooling system. i have a 15 pound cap on mine right now and assume thats too high. what pound cap did they use on big blocks with the option for maximum cooling. thanks guys

Are you having issues with leaks at this pressure or something?
The idea behind having the system pressurized is to raise the boiling point.

what type material rad ? Alum are at 24 lbs....copper up to 16lbs...if You are spooging over some..install a recovery tank

If my vehicles don't run hot, I'll run the lowest cap rating I can find....but I remember 16 lbs being the norm. The wife's 2000 Durango has 18 psi cap....

That is the right thing to do as it is easier on the radiator seams, hoses, heater core seams, etc.

Pressure in the cooling system (which is a sealed system) is created by increase in heat.. If your engine wants to run at 180-190 for example, a 12-14 pound cap will be sufficient to hold the resulting pressure.. Above 200 you may want to go to 16 on a copper/brass radiator. Keep in mind it's perfectly normal for a system to puke or release pressure once you've turned off the engine and the stationary coolant is absorbing left over heat around the cylinder walls.. Always run an overflow bottle to capture the coolant in that once the coolant cools the system creates a vacuum and returns the coolant to the radiator as opposed to atmosphere or air that enables corrosion. Check your cap to insure the silver or brass button in the center of the underside of the cap is working properly by pulling on it and letting it snap closed (6 ounce spring).. D-
