IMO....Use the TIMKEN tapered roller bearings installed with the factory OEM style adjusters....and go down the road for miles and miles in complete confidence..... others will disagree and have their own preferences.Resurrecting the thread. BTW has anyone here drilled and tapped the axle housing for grease zerks , to grease the rear axle bearings? I know years ago, the factory did that, but I think there was problems with people putting to much grease in them . .........................MO
I had a 1956 Chrysler and was in a 1955-1962 finned Mopar forum. IIRC there were a few cars from that era that came from the factory with those grease zerks. Seems to me that it didn't work out so well because people would eventually get to much grease in the bearings and it would squeeze out into the brake drums-shoes..........................MOI've never seen a grease fitting on any factory rear at the wheel bearings. Tell me more.
I have seen them there also. But not many farm tractors have brakes at the axle.I've seen and greased ones on farm tractors (outer axle bearings).

So in the picture, the retainer ring on the the green bearing (opposite side if O ring of course) will sit against the brake back plate, correct?? Plate goes on axle housing first, then the axle with plate, green bearing, retainer ring will slide in.
Faciously speaking.....its not too late to re-install the origional Timken Tapered axle bearings with the factory end play adjusters. All of your fitmet issues will go away, just follow the FSM procedures for installation and adjustment and you'll go down the road for miles and miles with out any reservations. Just return the Green bearings to the place of purchase for credit. Others will likely have a different opinion. In this scenario the retainer/snap ring will sit against the outside of the brake plate. I'm currently installing green bearings on my 8 3/4 rear. It just dosen't seem right. It appears that a portion the outer race (comparatively speaking) is sitting "outside" the axle.
Please Help!!

The ring plate you're holding in bottom pic goes btw the pressed axle end bearing and the end of axle. The outer protruding snap ring is to sit flush to this plate when you slide the axles in, if not, the thrust pin may need to be taken out; wasn't necessary with mine but some have said this needs doing if the axles don't fully seat. Back plate goes over this to torque nuts secure axle. Right, I was just holding everything up there for sequence visual. I was trying to visualize the setup before having the bearing and the collar pressed on. It just didn't seem right to pinch that snap ring on the bearing between the brake back plate and the 5 hole retaining plate. I have since had email contact with Dr. Diff. They said the heavy felt pad they provide is to go between the brake back plate and the 5 hole retaining plate. Otherwise the 5 hole retainer ring would bend over the snap ring.That green bearing with the nicely painted rear isn’t in the axle flange all the way. The bearing will stop on the backing plate at the snap ring.
It also appears when that (snap?) ring bottoms out against the brake plate a portion of the bearing race will be protruding beyond the axle body. That also bothered me but I guess the area protruding out has no load on it. The bearings are set more inside the axle tube.
