Hi all, a friend recently pulled this 742 center out of his Newport as he was parting it, and and he's offering it to me at a very low price... it was apparently rebuilt not long ago and everything looks great except........ Spider gears broken inside the diff unit. So can you ID this for me? It's the power-lock style correct? Is it a very big deal to replace just the Sure Grip unit, as everything else looks good -bearings, wear pattern, etc. Thanks

it's a power-lok. you might be able to find gears and clutches and rebuilt it. if not a new sure grip shouldn't be to difficult to install.

Well I went ahead and got it, for $75 can't beat that deal with a stick (besides free lol) he even gave me the shrapnel! So, just looking in through the holes the spiders have definite breakage, and the cross shaft that holds the thrust spacer is cracked in half on one side. Besides that, bearings look to have survived and all else seems okay

Nice spider parts huh! I asked him how the heck he did that, he just shrugged and said 'I dunno'....he said the rear was making weird noises for awhile but it kept running okay...unfortunately the car was totaled before he could investigate.
It was a Big-C with a 440(stock build except aftermarket carb, intake, and ignition) no hotrodder by any means..

inspected- just replace the bearings and races and be ahead of the game
that junk dust will be everywhere so get to work with the brakekleen or whatever and a screwdriver/ scribe then a toothbrush

Helluva good price no matter what!
