I'll start off by sating I live in a very "Green" city...(Guelph, Ontario, Canada) The local university is known for Agriculture, Horticulture and Veterinary so this city is usually on the leading edge of all things enviro-friendly and is filled with tree huggers and hippies (Not that there's anything wrong with that!)

So this isn't the first time I've been scoffed at or belittled by a self righteous hippy for my choice of ride/hobby...

So at the gas station today here is how the conversation went between me and one of these people who happened to be driving a Prius (Prius Hippy will be "PH")

PH - Do you know how bad your car is for the environment?

Me - Is that a fact? Why don't you tell me..

PH - Well there's no emissions on it so it's not Green and... (I cut her off)

Me - Oh really? well first off.... my car will never see a landfill and it's already almost 50 years old... within 50 years you will have put at least 5 Prius' in landfill, My car is made out of Steel so if my car were to ever have been sent out for salvage more of my car is recyclable/reusable! My car was made in a U.S. city NOT from Plastic parts transported from all over the world by SHIP, TRAIN, Cargo Truck etc... Oh and My car only gets driven about 3000 km/year! Now explain to me again how your car is more "Environmentally Friendly"

PH - Got in Prius and sputtered away

Me - :)

P.S. this argument only gets better with Hybrid owners because the environmental impact of making batteries and the long term landfill pollution is horrible with those

The batteries will emit pollution as they rot. Coal fired Gens provide power to charge them. It is bull. I met a PGE manager telling me about the Tesla charging stations that are being put in. Taxpayers again take it in the shorts. I told him I am a "Fossil Fuels type of guy.

Excellent! Polite and to the point with facts.

Nice job. Sounds a lot like Oregon where the greenies feel free to be absurd right out in the open.
A little off-topic but funny: A few mos ago I was driving up I-5 in southern OR and had to move to the left lane cuz there were flashing emergency lights on the shoulder up ahead. Turned out to be a tow truck, the driver was pouring gas out of a can into an apparently out-of-juice Prius. Woulda made a good picture, but I wasn't fast enuff w/the camera-phone.

Sounds like your city has a smug problem

By the way, tell her to go drive an AMC, Gremlin. They get better gas mileage, most of these people have no idea that the effort (impact on the environment) required to build on Prius, is the equivalent of a lifetime of owning a Hummer aka "enviroantichrist". Personally I have had to deal with these people actually giving me those fake "your ride, was built before 1982" tickets. I told them to stop touching my car, and that they were committing a crime "a $50-$200 fine in my state". It also benefits to know the local sheriff :toothy10:

The facts are the following on Hybrid cars. I hate them and the tree hugers. Ok they have plastic cars that will go in the land fill, also they shut down coal fired generating plants my employer lays off 80 people involved in selling srubber chemicals to the coal plants, 1400 workers in Ohio get laid off. According to tree hugers no problem. The only thing they did right is make batteries from Lithium, which is not environmentally polluting. But these ******** think nothing thru. The Hybrid cars suck! They do not even consider clean burning diesel. Ok so our cars are not environmentally friendly either, but don't throw stones if your glass isn't clean!

X2 great job Hyrdgoon, good for you... they really hate it well you call their bluff, A-Typical Greenies BS {especially the Prius drivers} on how much better they are or their cars are, because they drive some Electric or Hybrid POS, when they are only driving a over glorified damn toaster...

You forgot to mention the local university is known for some pretty damn good parties... ANYWAYS, Prius owners can piss off. A volkswagen tdi gets better mileage. Conversation ended.

I've only seen one Prius in a wreck, and in addition to the cops, fire fighters, and ambulance crew, there were also two HAZMAT crews on the scene cleaning up the damage from the batteries.

I have similar discussions with the same types who want paper bags at the grocery store. When I tell them plastic bags are easilly recyclable, break down into powder in landfills within a few years, and require less energy to produce; while paper bags require trees to be cut down, last forever in landfills, require three times the energy to produce, and can't be economically recycled, they run off too.

I agree, I guess I'm a "enviroantichrist" with my Hummer H1. I don't care, besides it gets better mileage with the diesel than my wife's 2006 GMC Envoy. There are a lot more Envoys running around than H1's which about only 15k were made. So the greenies should get their facts straight, before exercising their middle finger.

As I say "who wants to drive a damn flashlight". Me never, I hope i'm dead and gone, when the engine is finally put to rest. Also when the internal combustion engine is no longer directly driving the wheels, or there is no engine,(electric motor, means no manual trans :( ) to me it's no longer a car...................

I read an article once that indicated that with all the hazardous materials used to build a hybrid, such as a Prius, once they hit the street, they have an environmental footprint equivalent to 80 THOUSAND MILES of an average gasoline powered vehicle. This means that they do not become anywhere near environmentally friendly until they have that kind of mileage on them.

Of course, at THAT point, they're likely getting close to needing a battery-bank change, which almost completely resets the mileage clock.

Excellent HYDROGOON and others! I and going to make it a point to be ready for the 1st enviro-nut that wants to pull the same on me

Everyone needs to replace their combustion fired car with electric...our environment will thank you later........

Can someone or all of you guys make a nice list so "I" can be ready?
Need help here when the "Green Meanies" come around.

What I listed is a pretty good list defense against any newer car as the production/manufacturing of these cars is typically more harmful to the environment than our cars could be over their lifetime.

I was given a bunch of reasons though against electric by a girl that I'm seeing (Project manager for a hydro company so energy is her thing) that essentially had our cars coming out on top over them too... I'll ask her to enlighten me again and this time I'll pay attention :)
