The city I live in recycles and this year, they said no more plastic bags....but they still take paper. It's made into insulation.I've only seen one Prius in a wreck, and in addition to the cops, fire fighters, and ambulance crew, there were also two HAZMAT crews on the scene cleaning up the damage from the batteries.
I have similar discussions with the same types who want paper bags at the grocery store. When I tell them plastic bags are easilly recyclable, break down into powder in landfills within a few years, and require less energy to produce; while paper bags require trees to be cut down, last forever in landfills, require three times the energy to produce, and can't be economically recycled, they run off too.
And for the liberal greenies, I just tell them they need to do more research and quit drinking the coolaid...and to piss off.
