I am building a 360 for my Charger and have been thinking about Dist. This is basically a stock engine. I want some opinions on what dist is best. Vote for the one you like best and explain why.

1. Dual point dist

2. Factory electronic dist.

3. A converted HEI.

4. other
 
i have had great luck with the factory style mopar performance distributor kits.

I originally said that I wanted you to have it and I still do. It will be a nice distributor should you decide to run it, or you can even sell it and put the money in Green Envy. Good luck with it.

Mopar Electronic did the trick for me and it only cost about $14 to do the conversion. I bought a late 70s early 80s distributor for a SB with electronic ignition and vacuum advance (beware of lean burn) out of a junk yard with the ECU and clipped the ends that I needed out of the wiring harness. Made up my own harness threw on a new cap and rotor and she runs great.

I believe one of the most critical parts of any good ign system is how well your housing holds the dist shaft. If the shaft has any room to float around, it will affect its ability to maintain accurate timing. A typical system will use either a magnetic pickup, or optical sensor to trigger the ign module. The process of the ign module grounds the negative side of the coil and saturates the primary coil windings. When the dist sends the signal to the ign module, the ground side of the coil is removed from ground and the saturated coil inductively transfers its current over to the secondary coil multiplying the current by providing more turns of the coil. After the stepped HIGH current leaves the coil it travels through the coil lead, jumps the air gap from rotor to cap, down the plug lead and jumps the gap of the plug to ground. The amount of resistance in the (secondary) portion of the ignition system dictates how much Amperage / Voltage the coil has to provide to jump a gap of the spark plug.
A lot of manufactures have been advertizing all sorts of (gimmicks) for many years trying to sell you something that is (better) than the other.... Just beware and go into any decision knowing how electronics "REALLY" work to make an informative decision!

I just use the stock stuff.

Adam stock stuff is ok. But I want the best possible performance that I can get. Ma Mopar had points dist,Dual point dist, and electronic dist, Now converted HEI are coming in. Thanks to Sixpack Dan I am reading up on the technical side of HEI.

You mean slantsixdan? I'm sure he won't mind that you stuck a six pack on him. Hay Dan, I bet you can haul butt now! LOL
 
Sixpack slant-6…h'mm. Well, how 'bout six Briggs & Stratton lawnmower engine carburetors, one for each cylinder?

No! Wait! I got a better idea…how about six Mikuni carburetors? (The car in the pics is real. It's a '63 Dart. I've ridden in it. It's fast and loud.)

stock elect work just as good as any of them if its set up with the proper curve.

I did the HEI conversion. Picked up 2 1/2 MPG, faster starts, Idles better, drives better... Easy to do. Bought a module from Advance, and the conversion bracket from a member here. Highly suggest.
 
I think the main reason people are shying away from the MP stuff is quality control. 30 years ago, it was top notch. Over time everything has been outsourced (not always a bad thing) and cheaper materials are being used so there are more failures. I think in comparison the GM HEI system is fewer pieces and provides just as good if not better spark.

All that said, I've been a big fan of the Mopar system for a long time. When working properly, it's hard to beat. With the blue, orange, chrome and gold boxes, there's an ignition system for pretty much whatever you want to do. But you can only carry SO many spare parts along for the ride. lol
