Do I need to pull the instrument cluster part way out to R&R tach?

Or can you get to it and get it out from the back side?
I'm replacing a miscalibrated tictoc with the charger specialites tach.

You'd make the job harder by leaving all the obstacles in the way.
You could take your socks off without removing your shoes but the socks would have to be cut to shreds.
There are too many components to work around. The pebble grain cover has to come off, The clear plastic cover has spring loaded buttons to remove, the column has to drop down some....

I don't have my FSM here or I'd look, why does the face have to come off, doesn't it come out the back held by 3 screws in the back?
I'm probably missing something about how the clock set needle comes apart?

you need to pull the gauge cluster. JMO

I assume we are talking about a 1970 B body rally dash cluster.
Drop the column down some.
Remove the screw from the clock reset knob, and the knob.
Disconnect the wires from the Tic Toc Tach.
Remove the screws holding the cluster.
Slide the cluster out an inch or so.
Remove the three screws that secure the tachometer.
Slide the tachometer straight back until clear.
Reverse the process to reinstall.
Nobody said this will be easy, but it does work with patience and a few foul words.

my 68 charger, but yes. I know there are a few differences year to year but I don't know what they are

So Jerry you're saying I need the cluster forward a bit to have the clearance needed to get the tach out but that's it, it'll fit in and out among the other stuff if I do that?
Clusters are a cluster, I'm fully aware =)

The more you drop the column the easier it is. Yes, the cluster needs to move forward, exactly how much is determined by how in place the dash harness is and how much extra wiring has been done.

Dave's photo has screws coming in from the back side on the blank. My tach has no threads in it's holes.
It would be handy to have a spare to look at, because the 2 sets of photos seem to contradict each other.
I'm missing something.

So speedo from the front clock/tach from the back
yes gauges and speedo front, tack, clock and blank from back. I have big hands and I dont think there is enough room to pull with cluster in dash. JMO

the housing is were the threads are not you tach

dont forget the tiny screw in the knob

Remove three screws from rear and adjust knob from the front....the tach comes right out the back. As suggested, all other gauges come out the front after removal of clear lens.

I've done it many times removing it from the back. You don't have to remove the cluster. Just patience and 3 screws. Easier if you remove the drivers seat.

Just stuck my head under there, the clutch pedal is where my head wants to go lol
