Does anyone here own a Chevy Vega or Monza ?

It's not mine,I can't find any close up pictures of the one i just sold but i'm 99 percent sure it's manual, power Vega boxes are not widely used and almost never used in a small/ mid sized hot rod builds. My only experience with Vega boxes are in light weight Model A's.

I was told years ago, somewhere around 3000 pound cars was about the max.

Kiwi, have you looked at electric assist? don't know if you have any room under your dash, (probably not) but the unit mounts in the column between the steering wheel & the steering box... Lotta hotrodders have adapted them.. Theres a high $ complete kit but you can also do it relatively cheap with a used OE assist unit....

I have actually spent a lot of time chasing electric systems - finding something that will fit under the limited space I have etc. Cost is not the issue, as they are all about the same in the end. I looked at a Toyota electric system - quite popular here in jet boats used in river racing, and stock cars apparently.

I also contacted a company in Australia who specialise in electric conversions.....but after talking with the guy for a while, he started turning me off the idea - saying that the weight of the vehicle, and the fact that it would still rely on the original manual box for control, the steering box would wear out faster due to the appeal of doing more miles.

He suggested I go to the gym and workout a bit more....be prepared for a lifetime of 'Armstrong steering"

Its' not about the driving forward so much, as parking and reversing in tight spots. It gets a bit heavy when trying to manoeuvre around carparks etc. Doing burnouts is easy....all the weight transfers out the back. Same with cruising....weight is not a problem then.

Thought about it briefly....hard to mount the rack really....not without severely altering the suspension geometry.

Been snoopin' around some on this. Sorry if I'm
covering old ground.
There is a revised corvair box available that
looks to be even smaller than the Vega box.
I have yet to see if one is available with power
steering, but I'll keep digging.
