Dog sled racing is big here. Besides being a tough sport for man and dog it is keeping old traditions alive. People travel from all over western North America to participate and watch.
For the second year in a row ours were cancelled this weekend because it is too cold. Contemplate that for a second; dog sledding was invented in this part of the world but it is too cold to do.
Part of the problem is the month they picked to hold them here. December-January-February are our coldest months. Most communities hold their races in March when things are starting to moderate a bit and we may have to see if that is possible here. And we can no longer hold them in April because as the planet warms April is now too warm with snow turning to slush and water weeks earlier then it did only a few decades ago.
Walking our Ridgeback Cora in this weather is entertaining. She is super intelligent and super active. I drive her out of town out to where the dogsled track is so I can walk and run her off leash because she HAS to run at least once a day. Walking on a leash isn’t enough, she needs to turn on the afterburner and really stretch out and run once a day, at least. But being a South African dog with a relatively short coat she does not like the cold. On really cold days her muscles cramp up for about a minute as soon as she leaves the Jeep. Usually she limbers up and carries on but on really cold days she just wants to take a dump and get back in the Jeep. I, however, am aware that she still needs to run a bit to burn the calories off and wait for the cramps to subside so we can resume our walk. So then she hams it up a bit and deliberately acts as if she is in distress. I’m not fooled and carry on walking. Eventually she realizes that the only way to get back in the nice warm Jeep is to run to catch up to me, walk and run a bit, then return. However, she has learned a new tactic: rebellion. Now at a certain point she will simply turn around and run back to the Jeep without me.

Sahara, you've got a short coat south African dog where it's 30 below zero, and I've got a long haired, heavy coat GSD (actually, two!) where summer is often 115°f.
I guess we're not very bright, lol.

I've seen several huskies/malamutes with different color eyes. Always slightly disconcerting.
(All of them were beautiful, friendly dogs, tho)

Just as an aside... two different eyes - blue and gold/brown - is "acceptable" per breed standards for Huskies, but not for Malamutes. Malamutes must 'match' and be brown. A blue eye in a Malamute would disqualify them from a show or registration as a pure breed, but doesn't make them any less wonderful. Malamutes are GREAT.

This represents about a third of the glow balls I've thrown away, not counting the other assorted ones that got round-filed too. These all have chunks missing, or are about ripped in half.
Each of the small ones are $7, the big ones $10 (if I remember right)
All of the one's shown ended up in the dumpster this morning, except the piece of ball that Magnum horked up, the piece in the middle.
We have many balls that wear better than the glow balls, but my guys don't like them as well, and I want nice soft balls for their teeth (learned that lesson the hard way with Mopar)
Oh well, off to the store for another $30 or $40 for........ priceless love and entertainment!
