Fruit cakes hitting the local grocery stores everywhere. Do you like fruit cake?

I don't care for those along with some of the other fruit cakes that end up in stores these days...
 
There is nothing wrong with fruit cake......unless there are nuts inside.

The problem with the nuts is they tend to go rancid as the cake ages. That is what poisoned many soldiers fighting in WW1 - sent cakes from home (New Zealand & Australia mainly) - by the time the cake arrived on the front lines of Europe & Turkey etc, the nuts had gone bad, and in turn the soldiers were poisoned.

Rancid nuts can poison you? I’ve definitely eaten rancid peanuts at the bar while drinking. I think I’ve eaten fruitcake toasted with butter on it, not too horrible….

That's a good bit of information you can post in the trivia thread. I hadn't heard about it.
