My drivers door was crashed into back in the late 70's and it was obviously so bad that a new one was obtained from somewhere. By the looks of it, it looks like it came from a doner car but one thing struck me as being odd. The door Vin had been painted over. I decided to take some lacquer thinner to remove the paint to see if I could find out the vin from the doner. When I removed the paint, the vin label was blank. The thinner can't have removed it because there would be some remnants of numbers. Can anybody please shed some light on this?

Many Thanks

More times than not, the numbers on these stickers become illegible after a time, just through the passage of time. The fact you used whatever it was to remove the paint, also likely removed what vestiges may have remained of the numbers on the sticker! After all, they were simply printed on the sticker. The fact that it was painted over in the first place was probably so that VIN and the dash VIN would not be confused. The dash VIN and other VIN stampings on the car are what matters, anyway.

Agree. At this point, the door sticker really doesn't matter.

Yep fair comment and you are probably correct. i just would assume that you might see some of the original markings or even a slight indent. Anyway no matter, I was just curious.

I thought those stickers had a clear overlay put on them when they were installed.
