I meant the stuff that goes in your belly. It was a time before GMOs, corporate farming, and the deadly food pyramid from the FDA. People took better care of themselves back then without having to think much about it.

This has been in my mind also lately. Being self-employed and only able to work limited hours this summer on count of health issues SS would have at least paid the bills. Now I am wondering if lossing everything is worth the 02/21 benifit date.
Investments are tied up for a few more years and when money is pulled I dont want to have to repay into the fund.

I used to set at the lunch table in the shop I worked at, and the guys 20 years older than me would say the same thing “I’ll never live long enough to get my SS” That was 43 years ago (1976) My boss at the time was 42, he is now 85 and drawing SS. I am now 63 but haven’t started to draw it yet. The scare was the same back then, “ If you vote for the other side you can forget about drawing a dime of SS because they are going to spend it all. I hope you are wrong, and get your SS. I think it’s been a political football for a long time.

Another point to consider is that when you become eligible for MediCare you can opt to have it taken out of you SS monthly payment. If you do it that way then you are locked in at that rate cost permanently. If you wait to collect after 65, then your Medi/Care rates will increase. Just something else to consider...cr8crshr/Bill

Do yourself a favor and dont listen to advice given by some on collecting and applying for SS and Medicare benefits when you do finally decide to retire
Its a personal decision and what works for one, may not be good for another.
Retiring at 62 just to collect is up to you. Many just aren't ready to retire then for a whole lot of different reasons.
There is plenty of information on their web sites and if you can't get a answer to a specific question you can call

Being advised to ignore advice from those whom have already travelled the path. What is some one trying to hide? Granted its a personal decision. But just what is wrong with learning from those that are all ready there? By the way I am headed the the local SS office tomorrow.

Telling of experiences with SS or what SS was and is intended for is way much different than giving advise
I’d think that’s plain common sense,obviously not to some others.
My opinion is your doing the smart move actually talking to SS representatives. When my wife became unable to work,our dealings with SS were positive. Good luck to you

FWIW, Around here you have to make an appointment. They said they were booked a month or more for an office visit. Kinda' like the VA. An "over the phone" appointment was only 3-1/2 weeks.

How do you justify giving advise?
You stated a warning/advise- to readers to "not listen to some" for advice.? Please advise further about those advisors to avoid. (posters on this site??) Did something here motivate that statement?

BTW that is good advice. --One -should- seek many sources for information on this topic and asking those that have been around this block seems more than appropriate for discussion.
Considering the suspected (and polled) age of most readers of this site I would expect much first hand and practical information can be had here from real-life people that are truly in tune with this topic.

On the issue of discussing the origins of SS-?
IMO it is much like a reminder about the whole picture from the beginning.

History, if dismissed, will have to be relived to regather its value.
(our constitution (for example) is currently being dismissed as being irrelevant in current political conversation). How is that working out?

One thing don't even believe what SS people say. I had a slightly unusual situation and talk to SS and got the wrong answer. I was collecting SSDI my wife is 2 years older she asked if she could collect like I reached 66, which I was collecting. SS said she had to collect on her SS benefit until I reached 66. That was wrong and it cost us around $10k. They did pay a year of what they should've paid but lost 3 years of the difference. So don't be afraid to call SS and see if you get the same answer or if have a complex claim get a lawyer who deals with SS cases.

I have to add this to this topic here. I got a call just yesterday. (yep another one)
They (the SS) called me about a problem/issue. They wanted to protect me from a scam.-
SS does ----no business/resolutions---- over the phone. --I just had to add this important heads up. --If one likes to toy with scammers have at it. (it is a sport with me).
I guess this could be considered "advice" so be it. Live and listen and learn.

Guess I will find out when I get there. Here this is small community stuff were we get treated like people not just another number or why do I have to deal with the you you are complicating my day just leave. Yea I don't miss the big city crap one bite.

I am glad to here about your first experence. I went through that gauntlet myself. (Much like going to DMV). I waited for two hours and only to be told to go online to get/establish my benefit. (Typical with gov. run processes). Disjointed and stupidly confusingly. My online effort to establish my claim was a breeze by comparison to taking a number and hoping the person at the counter is up to speed with all the questions I had.
