try to shed some weight. is it just to balance the dryshaft or the whole drivetrain.might go with a alum. dryshaft but if its that important i'll just leave it along besides put'in in new u joints.
That part is called an inertia ring and I wouldn't mess with it. It acts like the harmonic absorber on the engine so altering it's weight may alter the resonant frequency on that size and length shaft. Plus the amount of weight you will remove by turning it down will be statistically insignificant compared to the total weight of the car.
I want to clarify one thing. The inertia ring has more to do with damping torsional vibrations from the output shaft caused by the engine firing pulses than the shaft itself. Some cars don't have the inertia ring and some do so go figure. Anyway, it's there for a reason.
