I did a quick search and did not come up with an answer. I have a 68 GTX w/11" drums all the way around and I'm having some issues with the right front. From 20-0MPH with a light stop I get a 'moan' out of that drum. Brake system has just been rebuilt with all new parts EXCEPT the drums. Those are all original. Looked like someone had cut the drums just a few thousand miles ago if that so I thought I would give it a try, these look original to the car. Also, one thing to note is this is the only drum without the original spring on the outside of the drum.

I have two new drums on order, I think the old ones were turned too many times and are probably over the 11.060" tresold.

Question is - for those of you who have changes drums, did you transfer the springs? If you did or they're needed, where can you buy them new?

Thank you!

You can get a kit with all new springsand everything else. I got mine from NAPA (cheap). Also, take a look at RockAuto, Megaparts, RT Specialties, local parts house, etc. On ebay, Rick Eherenberg sell things there as well. His ebay name is reherenberg(?) he has them.

I have new rear drums on mine w/o springs & not even sure that frts have springs. Just for noise as far as I remember, no noise from mine.

Pretty sure my fronts have springs. Always wondered what the purpose of those springs are.

Not sure why some have them and some don't, they are for sound- vibration I'm sure.
I would try take the spring from the other side and install on the one that's missing it and see what happens.

Yes, they are for the harmonics. That's why I think my drum w/o a spring makes noise.

I checked MegaParts and I see the springs. Searching for 'drum spring' returns all the internal springs, makes it hard to find them. I'll see if the new drums have a groove for them for the spring or not. Seems like any car after the early 70's didn't have the springs anymore.

Thank you!
