my first 440 build out of HS was a similar set up. i used a Mopar Hemi grind cam, with proper spings. and 1 3/4 Hooker headers. the engine was always a slug.
after years of experience since then i have come to these conclusions about that build.
1) needed distributor tuning BAD. this was the single biggest problem i had with the engine.
i would suggest getting your dist curved right out of the gate.
2) Carburetor tuning...not understanding the fundamentals, and not having the parts and tools to tune the carb, (whatever kind you have) and the experience of knowing whats going wrong when the car dosnt feel quite right, and understanding whats normal and what is not.
3) parts combinations. in the early 1990s Mopar cams had a fairly good rep. but my friends that were using Comp cams at the time always had a faster car that i did.
today i would not even considered a single pattern cam.
compression, many Mopar guys are scared of getting too much and having issues with pinging.
in my experience, the pinging issues i was having was more due to timing VS high compression.
the open chambered heads that have not been CCed, and milled down and most OE styled pistons that dont come up to zero deck will most always leave you with a low compression slug for an engine.
later on with this engine, i put an Comp XE268 cam in it, and put some 452 ported heads on that were cut .030 off the bottoms, that 440 was HOT STUFF after that and i still had done nothing with the distributor yet.
in conclusion, with some competent strategy you my be able get a lot more out of your car before you run it to the dyno.
