E 440 T ,,, Really?

The big problem with the engine is that the pistons are about 0.125" in the hole....really low compression. I'm either looking a new pistons or potentially a stroker kit. I think 440 source has an article about these blocks, and they are in fact some of the most robust of all the 440s. Thicker main webs, better casting practices (less core shift) and every one of the later blocks they've weighed are heavier than the earlier ones. You got a good builder candidate.
 
Sorry so long in replying. I did talk to the local engine builder about it and for how I plan to drive it, he thinks I should do fine with the low compression. Anything is better than the seized up mess that was in it.

I did go check out that 440 Source article and man is there a lot of info there.

If it is a true motor home engine it will have a completely different water pump housing! It actually is plumbed in to the head,also the exhaust manifolds are different.If you use it get a pr.of earlier heads, closed chamber will bring the comp.up a bit! You can use the pass.car waterpump housing and heads will work on the MH block.

The 413 was the only motor offered in an industrial version in a motorhome, NOT the 440. Too many people make that mistake. The 440 in motorhomes NEVER had the industrial type bastard top end and water pump. Ever.
 
just to clarify about your engine code,

T does not stand for truck.

it would read:

8T = 1978 (trenton plant)
440
E = cast crank

then it will have the month and day it was built underneath

they have the same heads as all 440's just different casting with really low compression.

the block does have the massive water openings and extra strenght ribbing along the block which makes the 73 and up motors the best for performance there only downfall is the nickel content is lower than the older blocks so alot of people prefer to not bore them too big.

but my 440 which is now a 505 stroker was a 1976 block and it read 6T 440 E, it used to have a cast crank but now has a forged crank.
