hey guys,
Need your help;
I have an original early-b rear axle on my 1963 Savoy; I swapped the original third member ( I believe it was a 741 non-suregrip unit ) with a 489 cone-type suregrip.
Right side: axle slides right in, and fits perfectly. Bearinghousing is flush with the axlehousing, perfect.
Left side: axle slides right in, splines fit perfect, but the bearinghousing sticks out for about 0,1-0,2 inch.
What could be wrong?

thanks!

One possible...
Pull that axle back out. Then look through the housing on that side. Inside the third member should be a 'steel disc', that the ends of both axles meet at. That disc sits between the ends of each axle, as a bearing surface, after you set your axle end play.

Your looking to see if that disc is laying sideways. The flat 'bearing' surfaces need to face each axle. If it's laying down, the axle won't seat all the way.

Thanks Miller. I found out that the bearingthrustblock of the 489 is a little bit wider than the thrustblock of the Original 741.
I still need to fill up a few milimeters on each side. A customer of our company will laser-cut 2 spaces to put on each side of the axlehousing. Problem solved!
