whats everyones opinion on edelbrock carbs. I have one on a 383 and it keeps losing prime

Losing prime? Well the fuel bowls will evaporate in a matter of days thanks to modern garbage gasoline, so that's normal, if that's what your asking about...

As mentioned, the "gasoline" sold today is formulated for low emissions in fuel injected cars with vapor recovery fuel systems. The fuel just vaporizes quicker than if you were running a "race" fuel. A friend filled some mason jars, one with pump gasoline and another with Race gas. The pump gas jar vaporized quicker, and left a residue in the jar. The race gas took days longer to vaporize, and no residue except for the tint of the fuel coloring.

The engine oil issue is sort of the same situation. If running a flat tappet cam, most of the shelf oils are not a good choice and you should look to use one of the speciality oil makers like Brad Penn, Joe Gibbs, ect. oils

Overnight. Have to prime everytime I start it

I have an edelbrock 1411 on my 440. What's your priming procedure? I pump once to set the choke, turn on the electric fuel pump and the motor usually fires right away.

What's your float level set at? Maybe it's too low? The bowls shouldn't go completely dry overnight...

I go out turn the key and pump the crap out of it it still wont start. Pour a lil gas down the carb starts right up

Changed the fuel pump three times same problem

I've pretty much ran one version or another my entire life other than a Holley here and there. if using a mechanical fuel pump, they can leak fuel back into the crankcase if the diaphragm is leaking. they can also allow drainback into the tank. after getting hot, the fuel will evaporate out of the bowls after shut down. mine have always taken a few cranks and pumps to fire. the accelerator pump could be worn out as well. I would suggest a rebuild and a new mechanical pump. I have also used a low pressure electric fuel pump to get gas to the carb to fire it, then let the mechanical pump take over with good results.

I never had this problem back in the day either. I'll check float levels tomorrow. I dont know

Do you have a choke and is it set properly?

Also do you have a carb spacer? I ask because maybe after a drive the fuel bowls are boiling the fuel away because of the heat. Might want to look into a phenolic spacer of at least a half inch...

Yes I put a thermo spacer on. No fix. I read somewhere about the accelerator pump cup ?

Next time try this, remove air cleaner and watch the discharge. rotate the throttle to full throttle and see if you get a shot of fuel.
Now dont prime it but crank it over for a few seconds. get out and check the same thing again, watch the discharge nozzles and rotate the throttle. Still no fuel ? replace the accelerator pump rubber cup. This can be done on the car or if you want pull the carb and work on it on a bench.

Yes still no fuel or very very little

I just put a brand new Edelbrock on my 383. It has done this, but I assumed it was upstream since the filter tends to be empty after sitting a while. I figured it was somehow back flowing to the tank.

That is a bit odd. Even in AZ my car will fire right up after 2 or 3 days with a few pumps of the pedal.

By prime, what do you mean?

Sounds like it's leaking into the engine.Smell the dipstick. Is the oil overfull?
