Engine Oil Preferences

Diesel Oil Downgrade???

Before choosing Valvoline VR 1 4 or 5 years ago I researched the diesel engine oils and found they were fine at the time with their zinc content. I also learned that the federal government was mandating that all diesel engine equipped vehicles were going to be required to have catalytic converters and zinc was known to stop converters up or damage them in some way and diesel oil manufactorers would be reducing the zinc content to compensate. Have any of you read this?

I also read that this mandate was effective Jan 1, 2007. It would only effect the vehicles manufactored after this date and nothing before Jan 1, 2007 would require retro fitting. I'm just curious what you folks have learned but I have read it several times from different media outlets. Has anyone checked the zinc content of their diesel oil lately?

Brad penn in my 440 charger.... haven't run it yet but the stuff is green...like the label says...$7 a quart hope its the real deal....My 04 ram 3500 diesel has one big catalytic converter on it...

Me too,,,,,,racing oil:headbang:

Yep,,,, good stuff!
Some non-believers should perform the same test I performed....
If you pour some Brad Penn oil into a flat bottom plastic container and push your open hand down against the bottom, you feel a certain amount of lubricity and also how well the oil actualy trys to keep your hand from coming in complete contact with the containers bottom.
Now do that with a modern day oil blend, and it feels completely different! Like it doesn't keep you from coming in contact with the bottom of the container....
Anyhow,,, in a nutshell that's what I noticed .....

All of you along with some self studies have convinced me that Brad Penn oil is the best! My 440 is moderately built and see's mostly street duty with the occasional 175 shot of nitrous (at the track of course). I live in West Tennessee and Summer temperatures outside range from 75 to 105 and it is hardly ever driven in the coldest Winter months. I have 3.55 rear gearing and cruise at around 2800 rpm's at highway speed. Using Valvoline VR 1 SAE 50 it idle's at 50 psi with oil hot and 75 psi at highway speeds. Do you think Brad Penn 10w 40 would be the best choice for me or go ahead with 20w 50? Or maybe even 15w 40 would be a better choice? Thanks in advance for your insight regarding this!

I would stay with the 20w 50, either Valvoline VR-1 or Brad Penn. I wouldn't go to a lighter oil unless you are driving in winter at below freezing temps.

That's what I was thinking. The only reservation I had was the high oil pressure but it has never blew gaskets. Thanks!

I broke in with 20-50 penn and kept it at 20-50....
