Currently running headers, 2.5" tube, flowmasters (not sure which ones). Downturned tips right off the mufflers.

The deep throaty sound of the exhaust is great until you spend 10 mins in the car in traffic, then it gets old real quick. Also, sounds like I'm trying to race every time I take off from a light.

Would the added length of pipe, to run it out to the rear bumper, quiet it down significantly?

reccomendations on decent flowing mufflers with a good sound that will quiet down the noise in the cabin?

Any exhaust that goes all the way to the tail makes it more quiet inside the car. Also, placement of the mufflers can make a difference too. Further towards the rear, the more quiet they are and muffler placement can make a difference when and if the system drones. I've run short and long straights for over 30 years and long pipes are quieter and diameter also makes a difference. Smaller diameter has a tendency to have a rattier sound than larger diameter. As for mufflers...I dunno. Gave up on them over 30 years ago lol

Take the exhaust to the bumpers and the inside of the car will change. If it is too loud now, it might not be after, even with same mufflers.

I have Pypes Pipes x pipe and muffler system from Summit. They rumble at idle and are quiet at speed. Love them. Running stock small block through 2.5" tubes. HTH

Regarding mufflers....

I've known Jim and Tom Hand for 25+ years. These guys know all about what works, and more importantly, what doesn't.

Yes, I know they are Pontiac guys, but they know what's up, and this article is relevant, even today. Read, enjoy and more importantly, learn....

I run the TTI 3" system with the X-pipe and Ultra-Flow mufflers out to the rear of the car. I like it alot as I can listen to the radio cruisin if I like as its not to loud but loud enough to sound good to me. I race it capped up thru the pipes so I guess it flows pretty good. I used to have a system that dumped at the rear end after the mufflers and I did not like the rumble at idle it gave. Here is a quick sound of my exh system as it flows good enough to let me runs 10's thru it. Ron

Thanks, that's good reading. Looks like maybe a set of Dynamax 17749s, 2.5" tips and an H pipe might just be the ticket.

That sounds sweet, but I may hold off on a large diameter x pipe system until after I redo the motor.

I asked a similar question a while ago, and the common answer is to use DynoMax Super Turbo mufflers. Flow very well, not too loud and no drone. I haven't acted on it yet, but plan to...

I ran a similar setup and agree, the drone is deafening. What I did was cut those flowbastards out and bought some Summit turbo mufflers. That took care of the drone - now it sounds mean from idle to like 1500 rpm but smooths out by 2000ish rpm and sounds nice.

Also, if you do keep the turndowns, angle them out at about 45*, that way the sound doesn't reflect back up off the road and into the cabin, it reflects out from under the car. A huge issue adding to the noise is reflection from the ground. I really noticed how bad it was when I drove over an open grate bridge near me - the sound was cut in half.

For me, this is good enough, although after a day of cruising around, the sound does get to me still.

Thanks HT.... I pulled the trigger today on new flow master 2.5" pipes to run out to the rear and Dynomax 17749 Super Turbo mufflers $200 total and free shipping from summit. We'll see how that works for now.

I selected the dynomax based on some reviews and Ron Wards helpful article link above. They seemed to be a good all around balance of flow vs dB.

H pipe is probably next but overall flow is not my biggest concern as the motor is not pushing huge flow on the exhaust side yet.

Thanks to everyone for the input.

The Dynomax Superturbo mufflers are good as stated. If you want quieter than you may have to give up some flow.

I agree the Dyno-Max Turbo mufflers and nice and not to loud. Myself I went with the Dyno-Max Ultra_flows because they are straight thru and flow the best but are noisier then the Turbo mufflers. But I knew I was going to race with the full exh on the car so I wanted the best flowing muffler. Ron

Keep in mind a H pipe will quieten down and balance the sound out considerably too so I would definitely weld one in while doing the mufflers!

Thanks to all the comments... I have been reading up on H-pipe (not looking to go the x-pipe route).

Sounds like placement just after the collectors is reccomended, but I really would rather run it far enough back to clear the tranny tail shaft for ease of removal. Will I still see the benefit of the H with it this far back?

I see you went with the nice long 20" offset in/offset out Dynomax - should be sweet. I want to go stainless (Dynomax 17629) but they are only 16" long..

AFAIK, H-pipe placement isn't too critical, unless you are chasing every available HP. Just be sure the holes in the engine pipes for the H pipe are as large as possible.

Do offset/offset mufflers work out better than offset/center?

Sorry I typo'd the part number they are 17748 offset/center

Anyone ever run these? http://www.classicchambered.com/classic/products.html Or even made some based on them? The boundary layer of air running down the pipe is pretty slow along the walls of the pipe and sticking in a pipe that's 1/2" diameter larger pipe (with shallow crimps) than the pipe you're using will do a lot for reducing the sound. The longer that pipe is, the more sound reduction you get. I've always been about making my own stuff and have the ways to make a lot of it and like making something from nearly nothing and not spending the bucks on store bought stuff. I guess I got that way when mufflers didn't sound the way I liked them to or rusted/burned out way too fast. It's not hard to make a crimping die if you have access to a lathe and the use of a press. Even 3//16ths" crimps will do the job. The only drawback is the moron at the inspection station that can't see a physical muffler even tho the system is pretty quiet...and yes, that's happened to me before. Texas law says you have to have a muffler and nothing is based on sound so if I have a muffler that's louder than hell because it has a straight pipe running through it, the car will pass....and yup, tried that one too lol.

Those look pretty cool, cranky. I'd be interested in their sound and performance as well.
