Exploring Overdrive options...

O.K. guys this thread is hitting home right now, got a coworker needing to unload a 4L80E, 350 combo. I'm seriously considering a 360 for the daughters 72 Satty and definitely want an overdrive, what do you guys know about the 4L80E's? I think I can buy both for under $150 and have a friend that could use the engine.

Hell man you gotta pick those up regardless that's a great price if you have the room to store it.

Nevermind, I did some research and took a look for myself. He's trying to pass a 700R off as a 4L80E:rolleyes:. No longer interested.

I looked long and hard at different solutions, 440 b body. If it was to be driven more daily and on longer trips then it would be a good investment. However if it was going to be less then 1000 miles per year then would be better off with 727 and proper rear gears based on tire size. It would need to a limited slip carrier no matter what I used. If I used the automatic overdrive transmission it would be the 200r4, because it can be installed with almost NO floor pan modifications and is what most of the people have used in the a body cars, which are a little tighter. With the Mopar overdrives interfering with the torsion bar mounting that increases the cost and complexity of the install. Lockup convertors can be made to work GM or Mopar mostly by the same ideas.

I have no idea how much my daughter will drive this but after going from a 727 to a T56 I'll never build a non overdrive car again. When you go from driving a car 2,000 miles in a summer to driving it 4,000 miles only because it's more pleasurable and affordable it changes your thought process.

Ideally I want a Mopar overdrive so I'll continue to watch these threads.

A518,618.46rh.47 are .69 overdrive.
Trying to remember:realcrazy:.... which one did you use. I'm curious about the Mopar options. I'm thinking #1 I really want to maintain all Mopar status, #2 with everybody around here being Chevy guys I may be able to pickup a Mopar tranny cheaper. What's the difference between the 2?

I dont know all the differences, some are for gas, others diesel, CRT is coming out with a manual valve body that will work on the electronic RE trans also, so that opens up more options.

Do you have an engine for the Satellite already, or are shopping options?

It has a healthy running 400 in it but I'm leaning towards a 360 or a modern HEMI instead. Really I'd like to go with a complete HEMI drivetrain.

Depends on your budget for this project. The Gen 3 hemi is a very cool engine, however if you have seen my youtube channel, I am a Magnum guy. If you do a 360 there is no reason you couldn't use an A518/46RE.

I'm gonna do the overdrive swap in the near future. I alarmist pulled the trigger on a gearvendor, but just not low enough of an od. I'm with you kern, if it was around a .70 id be all over it. I will run the silver sport tranny 4l60e. They have a 650ft pound stage three swap for 6500 through Johnny at pace. Really not bad for the whole swap considering the tko600 swap is around 5800. I'm a big guy and a shifter will hit my let being 6'5 and all. I prefer the go trans because of the bolt on bell, easy to change out to a gen3 without losing my whole drive train.
