This is just uninformed paranoia.
Everyone there has a ticket and has passed through security.
They are just trying to get somewhere.
You really think pick-pocketing is a real threat at the airport?
Most people I meet at the airport or on planes are pefectly honest and pleasant.

The real threat is having your wallet scanned a your credit card information stolen. Has happened to me twice while traveling. RFID wallet solved the problem,

The OP said they’ll have to switch airports. those two airports are not connected. I’m sure he’s not gonna have security taken them from one airport to the other.

If possible, I would change your flight, either get a connecting flight out of Dulles or Baltimore. Don’t get separated and keep your wallet in your front pocket.
