Exhaust studs

I would try and use the studs if possible because the heads exhaust stud holes.
go into the water jackets and if you replace them with bolts, they have a good chance of leaking.

If you're intent on taking them out, don't use a pipe wrench. use a collet type puller like
a Snapon and don't be surprised if some break off which means a head removal.

Headers are a giant PITA!

Good luck!

I usually lock 2 nuts together on the stud, then use a wrench on the nut close to the head. Since you yogied up the threads, use a stud removal tool- sears will have one. Spray the threads first with good penetrating oil, I like Pipe Break.

you could use the studs..like this..works great!
mopar bill has the right idea,,2 nuts....''':eusa_think:

He used the old studs because the holes go into the water jackets. Be sure to use thread sealer on the header bolts.

Yea they are right, headers can be a major headache. Seems to me only the front and rear bolts go into the water jacket? keep an eye on it. If it ever looks like a head gasket leak, check header bolts first. And they need to be re tightened regularly. I'm using stock H P ex manifolds on my 451, and it runs great! But headers would help power output I'm sure. N D is a great state! I been workin in Williston, just left today! Back to Colorado now. Good Luck!

I use studs on all except the rear #1 hole, I use a bolt due to clearance..it's also in a water jacket. It depends on your header pipe configuration.
