Looking to get raised white letter tires to replace my 47 year old tires. After 51 years the bodywork and paint are done and I am getting close to installing the engine and trans which is the last things to do. No way am I going near the road with these tires. The tread width of my G60-14 is 8 1/2" and the tire is 25" in diameter. 225/60 B.F. T/A radials, according to their website, are 9" thread width and 24.4" in diameter which is fine. My F70-14 are 7", and the tire is 26" in diameter. their 205/70 B.F. T/A radials, according to their website, are 8.2" tread width and 25.4" (their taller tires are even wider). I don't have power steering, not sure I want 8" up front. On Cooper's website Cobra GT's only show the diameter of the tire and the rim width. I can't find anyone with Coopers on display to measure the tread, they will order them but because they don't stock them they won't take them back. The Cooper Cobra GT 215/70's are 25.75" in diameter, the 235/60's are 25". Does anyone have these tires and can tell me what the tread width is? Check out the price of my tires, no mounting or balancing. Cornell was pep Boys house brand tires, they still look good 47 years later as do the Cragar S/S's I bought in 1974 for my 1968 Road Runner, 383, 4-speed.

Thanks

I have 225/70R14 all around with manual steering and it drives fine.

205/70R14 is too small for a b body. It will look silly.

The old bias tires look good that small with the square edge on the tread.

The biggest 14s you will find anywhere (except for a couple bias streetrace tires) will be 245-60x14s That's what I would run on the rear.
I'd probably run 225-60s or 225-70s on the front, depending on how tall you wanna be.
Then the next trick will be finding the sizes you want in white letter tires. Good luck (sincerely! )
I can guarantee that today's tires won't look that good in 47 years. And maybe not in seven!

Your 47 year old tires look amazing in the photos!

Go to this site and compare tire sizes. I've entered two sizes, you can change the sizes near the top left area.

That's a fact Jack !! 205/75R15 are pretty close to an F78-15. They're 27" tall and look good in the front wheel openning. 28's look good on the rear. Yes, I know you have 14" wheels ! That's too bad !

Agree with CY71. Most listings of tire width are talking about section width, not tread. I find Tire Size.com to be a very helpful site.

Summit will show tread width and “section” width.

Remember that the most important thing to consider is the load range of the tire.
Never go with a load capacity lower than the factory recommended size.
The tire is probably the most abused and important item on your car.
It has to support the weight of the car, absorb the potholes , train crossings and other items that get hit.
It must supply traction for acceleration, cornering and stopping.

On street tires too?
On Summit's site virtually EVERY tire will have all the specs. This is just a small sample from one tire:

Tire Size:
205/70-14
Tire Construction:
Radial
Sidewall Style:
Dual redline
UTQG Tread Wear Rating:
540
Tire Diameter:
25.35 in.
Section Width:
7.99 in.
Tread Width:
6.10 in.
Directional:
No

Summit does typically list list tread width, but not always. If you look the link up I posted above you will only find section widths on those 14s. Most of common 15" street tires, summit does have all the info, but many of the street tires the do not.
The op was stating a bfg 205/70 having a 8.2 tread width. That has to be sectional width because a 205 is typically around 6.3" tread width. Certainly a 205 is not a wide tire.

I’m not sure but I assume a 215 tire thread width is approximately the same in 14 and 15” for the same aspect ratio. Could be wrong. My Mickey Thompson S/Ts (same as Cooper Cobras) in 215/70-15 have 6-1/2” thread contact width. I’m sure if not the same in 14” it’s at least slightly narrower.

Thank you gkent, is your sample for the T/A? When I looked up the T/A 205/70R14 listed on Summit, BFGoodrich Tires 23353 BFGoodrich Radial T/A Tires | Summit Racing
I don't see Section Width or Tread Width, only Tread Depth. Same for T/A 215/70R14, BFGoodrich Tires 13823 BFGoodrich Radial T/A Tires | Summit Racing
For the T/A 235/60R14, BFGoodrich Tires 38765 BFGoodrich Radial T/A Tires | Summit Racing they do show Section Width but not Tread Width. Anyone seeing Tread Width on these?

I purchased a new car that came with 225/60R16 Goodyear Eagle GT's, when it was time to replace them I didn't want to pay the price for GT's. Goodyear had a 225/60R16 Viva ll, it was one inch narrower than the GT's. It would not surprise me if there is a difference between 14" and 15" but 6 1/2 is doable, I'll look into them. Thanks

I still use their paper catalog. Not that much info.

Theoretically, the three digit number in a tire size is section width, whether it's a 14", 17" or 20" wheel. The two digit will be aspect ratio, essentially how tall it is.
There are in discrepancies in real life as to how close to the rated number each tire brand is, or even within the same brand but different lines.
And obviously section width will depend on the width of the wheel it's on. That's why a site like Tire Size .Com will tell you the checking wheel width.
(I've had 225s on 8.5" wheels, and on 5" wheels. They looked a little fat on fives, and ridiculously small on 8.5s. Same tire)
