Fighting with this 440 idle!

Are you suggesting I switch something up?

Assuming that when I bump up the initial timing to 18 degrees I should also change the FBO plate to the slot labeled16 degrees?
If you feel that you have the most output with 34° total, yes, you could bump the initial up and have less mechanical.

Is the hot idle compensator still active on the carb, it creates a deliberate vacuum leak to intentionally speed the idle up when hot

The compensator is usually found on a/c applications.

And later Six Packs -
I usually hi temp silicione that port off .
So i can guarantee thats not causing hi idle .

Ill bet your issue is with secondaries cracked open
Or that FBO **** is junk .

I like the MP distributors that came with adjustable slots
with the torx screw .

I am having a similar woe on another car , and
When u figure it out - you will be kicking yourself.

But it sounds like youre on the right tract

Use the kiss principle - keep it simple
Get rid of whats not typical .

But it may be as stupid as that secondary link .

OP did a follow up to his issue in post 23.

is your accelerator pump in the top hole ? your advance is very fast for the street I am surprised you're not pinging. you can try 10* and then 20* initial timing you don't need to move your fbo plate to test your just testing of idle and not staying into it. on the Dyno Nick needed to use bigger jets in the Holley but your running stock jets in the stock carb did that have a good air fuel mixture on the Dyno ?.
