Anyone have a fire extinguisher in your car? If so where did you mount it? Saw article in Muscle Car Review where a 70 Torino caught fire and was total loss. Got me thinkin'.

I have a small one in my glove box, but to be honest I don’t think it will be worth a **** in case of a fire.

Halon extinguisher mounted on right side of tunnel. Expensive, but no mess... And , yes, I've used it!

Also, if you haven't already, check your Kidde extinguisher(s) for a recall.
I replaced 4 of them on it.

Spirt bottle of baking soda will knock down and put out small fire's.

A passenger car typically has all three types of fire scenarios - Class A (ordinary - paper, plastic, cloth), Class B (flammable liquids - fuel, grease, oil), and Class C (electrical). A 2.5 or 5 pound ABC rated Halon, Halotron, or Novec extinguishing agent will cleanly tackle all three fire classes. Yes they are more expensive, but worth it.

Classic mount is either on the tunnel, or under dash passenger side. Don't leave home without it. You'd be surprised what a disaster is avoided using it. I know.

I keep a 5ABC in trunk of car and two 10's mounted beside driver and pass seat in my Jeep mostly for grass fires or rollovers

I had a carb fire on a truck yesterday. Was able to another it out but I was a bit worried for a few. Not that an old Chevy us worth anything but I had better things to do than call fire dept.
Neighbors would be giving me **** til the cows came home.

Keep one on the floor or seat on passenger side, some day I will mount it somewhere within reach.

I once put out a small flame where the fuel pump fitting was cross threaded and caught fire, using my Levi jacket. The jacket caught fire, but the fuel line flame was extinguished. Stomped on the jacket to put the fire out on the denim material. The jacket had a Plymouth patch on the shoulder at the time (a red heart with a little tail) that got scorched a little, but I was able to tack it on the replacement jacket. The patch, thereafter, sported a small "burn scar". I could not find an exact foto of my patch (from the 1970's) but here are a couple of similar ones:

It's out there. There are different formulations of Halon - 1211, 1301, etc. Much of the Halon "production" today is recycled Halon, and 1211 portable extinguishers are readily available.

I have a 4 speed 70 Road Runner with a bench seat. I mounted a good sized fire extinguisher on the opposite side of the shifter on the transmission tunnel. I spent WAY too much time and effort restoring my car to have it burn in a fire...

Have one on the passenger side of the transmission tunnel in my car, too. Little quick release clasp, quick and easy to get to. ...And as others have said, get Halon or some available derivative if you can help it!

My brother-in-law had a dry chem in his Chevelle. Unfortunately he had a surprise electrical fire arise from a poor quality, previous-owner splice and had to use it. Couple poofs and the fire was out, saved the car as planned, but what a huge mess after the fact. Looked like someone rammed baby powder in a cannon. That stuff stuck on and contaminated nearly everything. Got inside the alternator, I think he had his air filter off, every oil and coolant drip became cake, etc.

Anyone ever run a halon extinguisher with tubing through the firewall on a street car? I have a regular kidde but have thought about plumbing in a halon into the engine compartment.

Not a bad idea, our Volvo loaders at work come with a round rubber entrance hole in the hood for pushing an extinguisher nozzle into much like your saying.

Had a Phoenix halon system in my 68 roadrunner, but she was running 10.00's @132 never had to use it , well Almost one time. In my 67 GTX I carry a small halon in the glove box and a large halon in the trunk.
