Firing order question

You get a pushbutton with 2 alligator clips and connect them to the starter relay. that way you can hold your finger over the plug hole and push the button to crank the engine without the key in ignition. It won't start but will crank and push air at top of stroke in cylinder.

But, how do you get it to stop crank rotation where you want ? Wouldn’t you have to bump the push button several times to get it to stop where you want ?

Not really, when you feel the puff of air let go of button it stops immediately. and look where rotor is pointing. Do it several times and you will see it will always stop in the same position.

every auto parts store will have a starter relay push button starter. you can also bump it forward to see the timing mark and clean it off and remark the lie with chalk. The leads are long enough you can stand in front of the car and use it.

Once you feel air starting to push against your finger you know you are on the compression stroke. NOW you go to the dampener nut and use a wrench to rotate the motor til the timing mark is at 0° (TDC compression stroke).

Yep, but all he wanted to know is where his number1 plug was on his distributor cap. and with the timing at -5BTDC, doesn't need wrench.

Easy way to check your timing is roll the engine back1/4 or 1/2 turn and watch the intake valve close, then set the timing mark where you want it. Put plug one wire where you want it, rotate the distributor by hand till the leading edge of the rotor touches that cap electrode. with the key on and that wire just off of the block you can see the spark. Tighten the distributor till it can barely be moved and “run set” the timing for what you want.

It really don't make no nevermind, there are 100,s of ways to do the same thing. Its what you are comfortable with. 60 years ago I was doin this, its automotive 101. sum of these kids are just learning how to do this, I think that's great! an you know what? we are still doin it the same way. why? its the same kind of engine, from a de clerk to a lambo! no mysteries here.
