The date codes are there for more than one reason.

Yep. It is unfortunate that most of us don't drive enough and tires look like new.I have about 12 tires that are between 10 to 18 years old that look new. I use them just for rollers.This was a 10 year old BFG TA that blew.Not mine but at a body shop. I had to take a photo.

I feel your pain, I lost the drivers front on my runner last fall, took out the fender and the lower valance. just got lucky the door didn't get kinked.
