This a 68 440 4 speed with all original parts I believe. The flywheel rubs against the inspection cover. We found this when we tried to turn the engine over by hand. Motor would turn easily before we mated the 833 to it.

We removed the inspection cover and engine would turnover easily again.

It’s a correct 11 inch flywheel with 143 teeth, we believe it’s original. The bell housing is also a correct casting. The inspection cover is also correct. Brewer’s rebuilt the trans and I bought a reconditioned bell housing and inspection cover from them too.

You can see where the teeth of the flywheel scrape on the inside of the inspection cover near the block. It would appear that a fix could be to shim the flywheel but id rather understand what’s going on here and get it corrected if possible.

I have no pride at this point so WTF is happening here?

Call Brewers. Its either a wrong part or you have a crankshaft problem locating the flywheel incorrectly. I kind of doubt its the crank but at this point you need to find some numbers that tell you where the flywheel sits in relation to the block.

Yeah we are trying to figure out if there are some reference numbers/measurements for clearances between the block and the crank or flywheel and block.

Does it only scrape when you push the clutch peddle down?
If so, I might suspect a worn crank thrust bearing.

Because of one staggered bolt hole, the flywheel can only go on one way. 11" flywheel and 10.5" bellhousing and cover?

Not sure if photos help but here they are.

Just Bought a new, “reconditioned” inspection cover and this one won’t even align with the bellhousing holes. But it will mate up perfectly to the bell housing when the bell housing is not on the block.

Didn’t know we had this issue because I bought a re pop inspection cover and that one “seemed” to fit but the engine wouldn’t turn over later when we tried by hand.

Photos below of the re pop inspection cover showing where the flywheel teeth touch the surface of the bell housing.

My engine guy mentioned a thrust bearing concern too. He didnt build the motor, another reliable source did.

There is a difference in the bolt spacing on the two outer rear bolt holes. 10 3/8 on the 10 1/2 cover and 10 5/8 on the 11 inch. He claims its a repop cover. My bets its made wrong.
The repop inspection cover is painted black and 11 inch and fits the bellhousing but touches the flywheel.

The second inspection cover is a reconditioned factory part in red primer. It wont even align with the bellhousing for the screws to go in. Appears the flywheel is in the way.

The bellhousing is a 68 casting for an 11 inch.

The flywheel is wrong or in the wrong place because the crank is too far forward.

So you have an iron 11 inch bellhousing casting number 2892262

Yes. I even bought an actual 11 inch inspection cover to make sure it wasn’t the re-pop. The reconditioned factory inspection cover wont even go on unless we take the bell housing off and then it fits like glove.

bellhousing and inspection cover are both original Chrysler parts and 11 inch.

It looks like the flywheel is the problem I would not use that one.

A replacement 143 tooth 11 inch flywheel should be the fix.

You might want to take some measurements on the flywheel before you drop more coin. It looks pretty funky on the engine side, but I’ve never had a factory 11 incher

Does your pan forward face angle toward the rear?
If so, maybe a shim at the arrow?
