With its 6,000 Hp. V-16 engine, the Electromotive Division SD90MAC was about as powerful as a single locomotive got. Purchased new by only two railways (Union Pacific and Canadian Pacific) partly due to steeper track grades in mountain passes than their competitors endured, they entered service in the mid 90s. However, reliability problems led to discontinued use after only a few years, in many cases the CP units were re-engined with more reliable 4,300 Hp. engines and renamed SD70ACU while UP has rid themselves of their inventory.
