Looks like the Eddie is on today according to HNN. I have it on you tube. It has not started yet but should about 9am
Looks like the whole island shut down to watch this

North Shore big wave super comp ?
is that the Eddie ? named for/or after big wave surfer Eddie Aikau ?

I was watching some deal in/off of Portugal a few days back
it was an older event thou, I think

I haven't followed surfing for years now...

Used to love to surf, had an ancient 6'8" Honeycomb board, from the 70's
I'm not a lil' rubber surfer dude, I was still like 6'2" 225#s until like 2007
when I 'was' still surfing Calif coast mostly,
did some surfing off/near Waikiki on a rental, the board sucked
& outside of Honami (?) Bay, Oahu Northshore, outside of where they snorkel a lot...

Waimea bay is way, way too big for me, when it gets over 6'-8'
it's out of my league, I know my limits
but very cool to watch, the guys/gals who can surf it, they got huge balls of brass

It is the Eddie Aikau. Probably the most prestigious surfing tournament. I think the minimum wave size is 30feet before the contest is a go. It's still on. The waves are huge and the surfers are crazy.
Waimea is just beautiful, the bay,the valley and the hills behind.
I have snorkled in Waimea in the summer when it is flat and watched surfers in the winter but there's no way I surf with these guys.
