finally got my car running after 23 yrs last year and earlier this spring the car died 7 miles from my house. checked it out and it was the fuel pump. When i took it off the engine the arm was still in the motor. so i pulled it out and installed a new fuel pump. it worked until last Sunday when the fuel pump stop pumping again, grabbed an electric one to just get the car home. when inspecting the fuel pump arm it looks like the rod in the engine that drives the pump is just barely touching the pump arm and eventually pushes past it. there appears to be a spot for the rod to rest on the pump arm but the arm isnt long enough. has anyone had this problem or can anyone suggest a quality pump that has a longer arm

I would inspect the push rod for the fuel pump. It could be worn down. That, or the lob on the cam could be worn as well.

the engine is a 67' 440hp the rod wont come out it just slides up about 1/2" then slowly slide back down when i push on it with my finger. just changed my oil and there isnt any metal shavings in the oil so im hoping its not the cam. is the rod suppose to be able to slide out?

There's a plug just below the pump that allows the rod to come all the way out. Pull that plug plug then reach in though the pump opening to move it on down. It should be a certain length but right now I can't remember exactly how long it should be.....

It's sounds like the fuel pump pushrod is worn down. Comp cams sells them for like $17 (I had the same issue 2 years ago). If you look, right below the fuel pump is a plug that you can remove from the block to slide the push rod out. As mentioned above, after years of the pushrod wearing down, the cam can beat the top of the pushrod up pretty good and actually mushroom it a bit. If this happened (like mine) it won't slide out, you'll have to remove the top end and front end of the motor and pull the cam to get it out.

Just be sure to call COMP and confirm the correct pushrod material. Whatever you do, DO NOT get the hardened tip push rod, as this will destroy your cam. The pushrod is designed to be sacrificial, wearing down rather than the cam.

Thank you all for your words of wisdom. I will take out the rod if it will come out when I get home after work

rod wont come out! looks like a tear down this winter, until then electric fuel pump will have to do

I had that problem. Shaft was worn down about 1/2 inch. Installed a new one and had no more problems.
