I'm looking to buy a fuel pump for my 512, and would welcome recommendations from anyone running this size engine. Will a holley or carter mechanical fuel pump provide the flow that I need and will I need a fuel pressure regulator. A few details on the motor

- 512 cu in
- Hughes Solid Flat Tappet Cam - HTL5660BS3 Lift: .579" Intake, .587" Exhaust, 108 degree LSA, duration at .050": 256 I, 260 E
- Head flow at .550" = 318 I, 256 E.....@ .600" = 322 I, 260 E (Mopar stage VI heads)
- Compression Ratio - 10.6:1
- Edelbrock Victor Intake
- QFT 850 carb
- Dougs D452 headers and full 3" exhaust

With the combination, I feel that I will be above the 550 HP range, and want to size the fuel delivery system to meet the needs.

I'm reading on the Mancini website that the Edelbrock RPM fuel pumps will support 600 Hp and does not require a regulator (6psi max pressure)....the Carter Super Strip will flow 120gph up to 9.5 psi, and the Holley will require a regulator on pumps that flow 130gph.

I'm new to this HP range and don't want to short myself if the Edelbrock uint won't work. If I have to step up to a pump/regulator, what regulator will be recommended.

Let me know what you are running and the likes and dislikes. I stayed with the 850 CFM because I want the street driveability and throttle response. My motor builder said that unless I want all out performance, I wouldn't notice the difference if I went larger Carb.

Thanks in advance for feedback/recommendations

I'm surprised that no one has input. I know that Propwash put together a 512....I'll surf through his Family Tradition thread to see if he states what he put in. I think his engine build is really close to mine.

Real close dsd....sorry I haven't chimed in (haven't been on). Don't know if you have done any surfing on my thread, but I have on a clay smith fuel pump on the 512. Absolutely no fuel starvation issues, far from it. I run a Holley Bypass return fuel regulator. That way I don't dead head fuel to the carb and the fuel returns to the tank, thus lessening any chance for fuel percolation/overheating issues. A more stable fuel feed as well. With the clay smith, you will need to grind/shape the side of the pump as well as some very light shaping on the block for it to fit. No worries, being you are very far from getting close to a water jacket. I had to take a big gulp before taking the die grinder to mine, but felt a whole lot better after ultrasonically checking the thickness and finding out I was far from having anything to worry about.

On a side note, I had a friends carter super strip-strip fuel pump bolted on the 512 for a short stint while waiting on a part. I'll readily admit I screwed up when taking out/installing the small bolts of the clay smith fuel pump (To re-position the inlet/outlet), and over tightened the screws on one side, causing the bottom diaphragm gasket in the pump to split on the edge. The carter ran the car just fine and had no issues supplying a QFQ 950 with 7-7.5 PSI of fuel in the 5000-6000RPM range. I believe they are self regulated, but pump on the high side 8-9 PSI. I bolted the Clay Smith back on (they are not regulated), being I know they pump more GPH and couldn't get over the fact I dumped $175 buying it and the hour spent griding/shaping for it to fit.

Hope it helps, and I have no doubt you'll be in the 550HP+ range

Thanks Prop. Question on the Carter street/strip. Would there be grinding required to get that one to fit? If not, I may go that way if it provides the fuel needed.

Also, what did you end up going with on the distributor? I'm leaning toward a FBO plug and play system.

No sweat Dave. The carter bolts on with no modifications needed. 2 bolts and a gasket and she's ready to go. As far as my dizzy, I initially was going to go with the billet petronix flame thrower III, but due to some clearance issues with the Eddy head, it wasn't going to happen without some serious excavating. Ended up buying a distributor from Don at 4 Seconds Flat. Was a real good guy to deal with and custom curved and phased the dizzy to the different parameters of my engine. During my Dyno, his initial advance of 22* degrees was dead on for peak performance. I'd use him again, but was in pretty bad health last time I spoke with him.

Best of luck, hope it helps.
