I haven't personally compared the two. Do open headers produce that much more HP and TQ?

yes they can

Yes if the engine is tuned properly for open headers, jetting, ignition timing & you have the proper header tubing size, type, length, style of collectors &/or extensions.... It's also lighter with out the exhaust system...

actually you can come pretty close to open header performance with mandrel bent pipes and straight thru mufflers. the system will be noisey though. a lot may depend on cam timing. a long duration long overlap cam is going to favor the system with the least to no back pressure. lot of variables.

As said if you have a real good exh system you might be close to open header performance. I use 3" mandrel bent exh on my 63 all the way out to the rear bumper. I race it thru my exh as I have never uncapped my 63. Ron

for a .060 over 440, 10:1 comp, ported stealth, M1 ported intake, hooker super comps 2" prim., either a 850dp or a dom, 727 and a dana with 410s I was thinking of running a 3.5 system but dumping in front of the rear kinda angled out, would that affect hp all that much or just keep to 3". Sry if I thread jacked I was just wondering, the car is mostly drag and will run a H pipe

i went complete tti 3" from the headers to the bumper but also put in electric cut-outs. does it make more power i don't know but it give's you a feel good feeling. like stated above its in the tuning.:headbang:

3" with ultra flow mufflers is plenty good enough.

for a full time race car, open is better with correct tune.for a steet strip car and todays hiflow technology in mufflers, run a full system.i always run a paint stripe down the outlet of open hedders, make a couple of passes, then cut it off where the paint is burnt off toward the end.cheep way to"tune"a hedder.

Reason I'm asking is I'm shopping for an exhaust now. I race on the weekend and hit a cruise occasionally. I was unsure how the cut outs would work too because my TTI header collectors kind of angle towards the driveshaft.

I bought the TTI 3" X-pipe system and not the Max Wedge system as I have no cutouts on my car. I use the Dyno-Max Ultra-Flow mufflers also and you can see where my tailpipes end here. I did that because they say the X-pipe gives a tad more hp and I did not want cutouts as this old man is to lazy to crawl under my car at the track to uncap the cutouts. I really think this system works good and would be surprised if I was any more then a tenth faster uncapped if that. I really like this setup as it sounds good and seems to flow good. Ron

Not a good pic but if you look hard you can see my X-pipe. Ron

there actually was a test in a mopar mag a few years back with what you are running and open exhaust. i think there was only about a .1 of a second difference. i use the 2" tti headers, 3" h-pipe and dyno max 3" mufflers. perfect fit, a little noisey but not bad.

That being said.
My race car did gain a .10 of a second taking off the exhaust

Wow only a .10 second? Once my Fords axle is fixed I'll order a full exhaust or see what someone wants to bend one up.

I might have a little more HP than the average.I use a 4 inch pipe off a 4 inch collector into a 4 inch "X" pipe reduced to 3.5 at the Hooker Aerochamber mufflers back to 4.5 and tailpipes out the back bumper.Even if I picked up a tenth or 2,it would be from the weight loss. It's alot of work to remove.I'm more street than strip,so I just leave 'em on.You can't hear my car in the burnout box next anything with open headers:blob1:

I agree a good mandrel bent exhaust can make as much hp as open exhaust. I have seen where the added backpressure actually will make a little more than an open exhaust. Example would be to large of a primary tube or collector size for your combination. I prefer exhaust over open headers because the look you get when you dust their a** in a pseudo street car. Even better with exhaust and DOT tires really pisses'em off, just saying. The days of restricted exhaust and losing 20-30 hp just by bolting on muffs are over

I've been calling around to muffler shops and no one can bend up a 3 inch. I guess these shops dont have the equipment needed.
