I'm about to start gathering parts for an engine replacement in the 64. Right now it has the stock 361 (which runs like a clock) but lacks in the power category and that WOW factor.

In terms of desirability/salability/cost which would be the most appealing? A period correct 383? A 426 Wedge? or a 440? I'm sure some would suggest the HEMI but that's out of my budget range.

Any and all comments or suggestions would be most appreciated! Thanks

From the looks of your 64 I'd go with either a 383 or 426 wedge! Keep it period correct! I'm partial to the 64s (2 64s a hdtp with max wedge, and a S.F. conv. 383) Nice car BTW

Stroked 383, will have balls for days and lighter than a 440.

I think a stroked 400, 505" it is a low deck so you'll have a little more room for changing plugs and air cleaner clearance.

I noticed you said the word "budget". 440's are plentiful and tend to cost less.

With the usual aluminum stuff on both, you'd be around 80 lbs lighter. While most would consider that to be not much weight, it is right over the nose, so you would have better handling, weight transfer to the rear, lower engine bay temps, etc.

Well LOL the aluminum doesn't matter you'd have to assume "the same stuff" to compare them. 80?? You sure about that? I mean, I don't know but that seems like a hell of a difference for what, crank and block?

So far as the OP, don't know what to tell you. "I hear" that a 26 cost more to build these days, but a stroker kit for a 383 can't be cheap, either. If this were my car, I think a traditional 440 is what I'd do. If you want to be "mean" you could scrub the no's off the 440 tag and restamp it as a '26 LOL

361-400 ------------------------------------------- 620
413-440 ------------------------------------------- 670

Ok, I was off a tad, my bad.

LOL. I'm even surprised it's that much. Wonder what all they are "counting." Tell you though, that's a NICE lookin car!!!

Build a 440. Why give up the cubic inches? Put 426 stickers on it if you want to. They look the same on the outside. Plus how easy to find a 426? How about pistons?

I vote for a stroked 383 so you can say it's a 426 wedge and the nostalgia factor, for WOW go with a stroked 440.

It is hard to beat a RB motor dressed as a 426 wedge with a crossram intake. Just my opinion.

Those weights are for fully dressed engines.

I believe you'll find the weight of the bare 383 and 440 blocks to be nearly the same.... between 220 and 230 lbs.

Not trying to hi jack the thread but I have a 383 right now in my Plymouth Satellite. How much power can I get out of it stroked compared to a 400 or a 440 in terms of performance. It seems to have a modified cam in or so I was told.

I like my engine but my car seems very under powered so it might be the transmission. It is loud as hell but barely peels... although I never push it.

The 440 dressed up as a 426 wedge would get my vote and be closer looking than a 383 would be. Most cubic inches, more torque and horsepower. Put in the largest engine you can!

Your already ahead of the game, with the 361, since it's a big block. Yeah, the smallest, but with the mounts, any big block Mopar engine (except the Hemi), will slip right in. Kinda looks like an open book!

My question is what are your real intentions with the car ?? Just a cruiser ? Or do you want all the power you can get for the bucks you have and plan to race it some ? Or just a car show car ? I ask because to me it has alot to do with what eng I would use and how I would build it.
Oh and that is a very nice Mopar ! Ron
