Garage Must Have's !!

Besides the traffic light & crosswalk signal, I also have stereo, refrigerator, oil furnace, plenty of shelves, phone, lots of overhead lighting, air compressor, and place to park 4 cars...problem is, almost every shelf is full and I need more room.

Or less cars & parts

& A cool 69 Daytona doesn't hurt either

Always too many hoses & cords going everywhere... Never enough tools, never enough room for added toys, never enough storage or shelf space, never enough bench space, never an outlet 110volt or 220volt where you need them, never the air outlet where you need them, never a curtain for doing paint work or a paint booth with adequate ventilation, never enough heat or cooling, never enough light.... adequate insulation, ceiling fans {especially with taller ceilings &/or comp. tar/shingle or metal roofs} or roof ventilation for in the hot summer, are also a good ideas too...

small sheet break...small press(8-10 ton)...fan....bench grinder/wire wheel.....lots of bench space....2 wheel dolly......carts/heavy metal with good casters...and wheel dollies a must....I have a low ceiling so I have 2x air jack/lifts....radio you can hear over the compressor.....central ceiling mounted retractable air hose....drop lights (tube type)...spray cabinet to keep are-sol content out...paint HATES armor-all.....slide hammer...angle grinder....and good locks and trust worthy friends....and definitely curtains over any windows to keep noses out of my parts shelves ;)

Does anyone else have this type of lift ?

If you have limited ceiling height, go for one of these,

Gets your car about 4 feet up, so not without its limitations. Mine is a Max Jax and I think they are out of the USA. Comes with a little chair on wheels that whizz around on under the car. Fantastic for underbody work, pulling out fuel tanks, detailing the undercarriage, ripping out fuel tanks, diffs, changing wheels, repairing sills, doing services etc.

Check your concrete slab, must be 100mm minimum thickness and your overhead trusses on the shed, otherwise the roof of the car might hit them.

I'd be screwed without mine.

No I don't, but I'm looking into getting a 4 post lift, to keep my car on & be able to free up some floor & garage space, in a limited 10'-10" floor to ceiling garage, I really like the looks of a new Pro-Park-Plus 8 Extended Lift or maybe even another Back Yard Buddy, I have a friend that has my old BYB that was mine from before 1997, before I moved to Rancho Murieta & Before I moved here to Sonora, that I couldn't use it, because of there were too short of garage ceilings, for a lift of any kind in RM & real strict overly **** HOA rules & he absolutely loves it, But I kind of like the new PP8+ a little better now....

I don't have one, but I used them all the time when I was working...the only issue I had was trying to open door and work inside when car was on lift...door would open right into post

pissed me off

Most 2 post lifts require rite at 12 ft for the ceiling. I went with a 14 ft ceiling not only for the lift but also had to do it that high in order to install 12x 12 doors. However the ones pictured above are for lower ceilings. If I remember correctly they only require a 9ft ceiling.

A loft, I have a 12' ceiling as well but was able to put a loft above the workbench area. You wouldn't believe how nice it is to have somewhere to stash all of your parts while doing a restoration and keep your shop clutter free.

I'll be building a 2 car garage this summer for myself, so I'm definitely subscribed to this thread. Planning on 29x29. 1 bay will have clear 16ft ceiling for (hopefully) a future lift, the other bay will have a loft with 8ft ceiling and pull down stairs and a removable railing overlooking the lift bay.

Love the retractable air line idea, i plan on including retractable extension cords, and plenty of outlets as well. Maybe a retractable shop light as well, we'll see.

Another thing i've been thinking on is one day painting the car myself (never done that). so i've put some thought into placing my tool chest and work benches so they are out of the way of future plastic sheeting which will roll up and out of the way when not in use.

Another, non-car thought is this - setting up a nice, open workshop area for those like myself who do construction and renovation projects.

A mute button for the wife.

My mute button is foot actuated. :laughing7:

HT.............. I left it open as well..... that was my first idea, was going to petition it off, glad i did not as i have been many construction items with the nice open space, table and chop saws within feet of each other.... that is sweet no lugging around....

I have to find a lift for a 10'6 ceiling, I should have kept an area loft open in the ceiling, that was dumb... I was rushing to get it sheathed before winter... If I was to do it again, would for sure keep an open space for 12 ceiling....

I'm not married, but that's too damn funny....
That's the beauty of my garage, my dad and I built it when I still lived at home so now I live across the road down a 1/8 mile long driveway "she doesn't come over very often". No, she's great but I love my time in the garage with no distractions.

I'm not so sure about the idea of doing construction & renovation jobs as well. Our garage has a full woodshop in it to and it sucks, theirs always boards, plywood, dust and tons of tools cluttering it up "major pain in the ***". It seems like everytime I plan on laying some paint my brother will show up wanting to do a wood project and then there I am cleaning up "AGAIN". That's all coming to an end, we're finishing up a separate shop for it. I did end up building a paint booth that serves as a clean safe zone for the car.

My garage must have at least a 1,000 by 1,200 foot concrete floor, three feet thick. I need 60 foot ceilings, high pressure sodium lighting, in floor hydraulic lifts, and a railroad locomotive (GE Evolution series ES44C4, 4400 hp)supplying compressed air and electricity. A complete foundry, machine shop and cafeteria with pizza oven go without saying. Both high pressure water cutters and laser cutters will do, while the CAD drafting room will have the latest in 3D printers. The 60 ton overhead crane will extend from the powered rotisserie racks to the downdraft 4 car paint booth. During periods of light workload, I'll spend time in the upholstery fabrication press where vinyl fabric and top material can be reproduced to exactly match any era of mopar interior or exterior. Chassis, wheel and engine dyno rooms will be one floor underground to reduce noise footprints in consideration of the neighbors. I will also need a metric crescent wrench.

Right now, I'd just settle for the pizza oven.

:)
