Gathering spares, just in case....

I don't have the hoarder gene
like some here seem to :poke: that are all in denial...

I don't need to or want to accumulate a bunch of crap, old parts
just sitting around, for the sake of "What If" (paranoia)
that I won't use, probably...
Or to "Tie up funds" on that stuff...
I got more parts than I want sitting around, already...
I have reg type parts, spares for,
a new converter, plugs, wires, air cleaner elements & oil filters, engine gaskets,
valley pan, front brakes/disc conversion, 2 sets of headers, soon to be 3
a couple of oil pans, a few smaller stuff, like ignition parts, take offs,
the types of parts I actually "could" use still regularly...

Now If I had a bunch of car project sitting around, "I'd build someday"
I'd probably never get to, like some here do :poke: , sorry but it's true
I may store/hoard a bunch of 'that stuff'...

(Mostly of my junk is take offs, from my current car, that will go with my car,
if or when I ever sell it (otherwise it will all go to my nephew, only one who cares)
or the new **** I never used, sitting on a damn shelf, taking up valuable room
that someone bailed on a project, I got left holding/paying for the whole shebang/parts
most are too expensive to ship, too many cheapskates, want it free or near free...
So it sits until I may do another project, not sure I will do...)

I may have 1 more project in me, getting tired of the waste/money spent
I may do a Dude' Tribute shortbed 68-71 D100, modern drivetrain
or maybe a 68 GTS 383 4 speed or a 68 'cuda 383 4 speed
(like the one I inherited from my uncle I wish I never sold),
if I could find a good 'solid' candidate for the right value...
but;
caveat, I'd have to sell something,
my stuff/projects doesn't live outside in the elements, ever
& my garage is too small for more than 2 vehicles,
& my truck 99 Dakota SLT 4x4, will always be 1 of them...
I'm on my like 113th car/truck now already, I think I've done my share...
I never had to accumulate a "bunch of stuff", just because...

My racecars were a different animal, you needed extras...
My classic car isn't...
I don't need to take up what lil' extra room I do have, just "storing stuff"
(remember the old joke from George Carlin about stuff) for sake of what if's

I can't stand the clutter either, all my take offs go into my shed
I have enough of that crap already, I don't have the room or want to collect the crap either...
And in a few years I probably won't care what happens to the stuff either
be someone else's problem...

To each their own more power to ya'
if that's what you choose to do or spend your extra funds on...
I have more interest than just cars, life's getting more & more expensive nowadays
or making my place, shed or garage look like a damn
junk/wrecking yard storage facility...

I have been known to want to be alone with my sheetmetal! Everyone has their kink! lol

I have spare parts for all three of my old cars. I call them insurance policies. Knowing my luck, I will never need the them since everything that fails seems to be the parts I don't have. However, the spare parts I do have gives me that feel good sensation.

Delta V posted a link to Stinger fiberglass for these:

I'd buy these right away if they were available!

funny . if you keep spares (stuff) other people look at you as a pack rat , hoarder ….. it’s not in style these days . BUT i have a lot of repair parts , steel stock and stuff laying around in a shop to fix most break downs . as a welder/ fab guy i get quite a few surprise visits from the neighbors. all of a sudden it’s not that hoarder / pack rat guy no more. now it’s mr. pack rat ! lol !!!

There is a story behind that. I bought two NOS 70 Charger rear quarter panels at Carlisle, and I didn't want them to get stolen from the truck so I brought them into the hotel room and put them next to the bed. That started the rumor that I slept with my sheetmetal! There may have been some late night fondling of those beautiful pieces of Mopar steel!

That's been said before! I even have the PERV van. Perv stands for Pete's Excellent Recreational Vehicle! My wife won't get within 50 feet of it.

Good idea if you've got the
space to store.
I've racked up quite a
number of different parts
for a truck that is over 80
years old. They're gettin'
harder and harder to find
at decent prices.

I'm starting to think that maybe I should start gathering spares of stuff that is getting hard to find.
Some stuff is reproduced for our cars but other stuff is not.
I worry that if my car gets in a front end collision, it might take awhile to gather the parts to put it back together.
I see that Classic Industries has these:

These have been available for awhile but I don't know anyone that has bought one. Nice originals could be bought for less, I'm guessing. I haven't actively shopped for a spare grille but I probably should. One bird or tree branch could take out the original one I have in the car...

In 2022, I saw these at Spring Fling....$650 for the black one, $800 for the other. They needed slight repair.

I drove the car to the show and couldn't fit a grille in the car without risking damage.
Doors for the '70 interchange with the '69 and with some minor work, a '68 door can be made to work. Quarters are similar.
If you have a car where there are ample used parts still around, good for you! I put together a few Dusters and Darts awhile back and was lucky to have access to body panels, interior stuff, suspension and steering parts too.
If you have the space to store parts, what sort of spares do you think we enthusiasts should stock up on?
Probably a good idea

One of my former addictions...just a sample of the inventory.

I had about 20 early Hemis, too

I have spare switches, bulbs, fasteners and an nos 69 GTX grill. I don't think I can afford spare sheetmetal or trim. I have random parts and pieces.

I’m at the Spring Fling here in Southern California. The swap meet isn’t as big as it has been before but not as small either.
I saw nothing that I could use. I always like to buy something just to feel like I got something. I’m sure many understand that.
I was blown away at the hood deals on Challenger and Cuda parts. 71 Challenger fender for $250, 69 Dart fender for $125, 70 duster doors, $80 a pair. No 70 Charger fenders, hoods, body panels or grilles. None. I want to buy something!
