I have an auto trans in my 65 Coronet. I am able to move the car out of park without putting the key in the iginition. Is that normal for this year car?
There wasn't any "safety" systems back then. Or stupid people like today. That's why the auto manufacturers had to safeguard people from doing dumb things. Safety natural switches were about the only thing used back then so you couldn't start the car in gear.
When the ignition switch was moved to the steering column, a mechanical device was created to lock the shifter and the steering wheel. Console shifters were equipped with a push button to keep it locked in park. Then as the years progressed more switches and devices were added to safeguard the public from doing something stupid. The list goes on and on!
Believe me, there were stupid people in 1965.
