I just bought a 2004 Neon and I'm hoping to get the best gas mileage possible out of it. I'm going to clean the injectors and throw some new plugs in it, give it an oil change, and find a better flowing air filter. Any other ideas to save fuel economy? Other than keeping my right foot off of the floor.

Thanks,
-Ryan

Drive like you have an egg under the accelerator pedal, lol!

keep the tires properly inflated

All that stuff and synthetic oil too. Short change it the first time. Then ever year unless you drive more than 15thou.

If I switch to synthetic should I use the viscosity of oil? It recommends 5w30, so find a 5w30 synthetic?

Not selling it, but I would use 0-30 Amsoil signature. Best start up protection and additives to massage seals. Not cheap but worth it.

Non-ethanol gas will give you slightly better mileage (usually 2 or 3%) if you can find it. Doesn't help if you have to pay extra for it or drive out of your way looking for it.

Find the sweet spot when cruising, my passat 1.8 turbo gas wagon gets great higheay milage at 65 spot on !

Buy a scangauge , they are generic and they plug into your obdII port, gives you everything from milage it incoming ambiant air temp engine temp as well as a few other goodies. It'll help you find the sweet spot.

Agreed on the egg under the pedal! Most of fuel economy is purely your driving habits. Accelerate slowly and dont slow down if you dont have to. That's how I convince my wife to let me take turns with "less braking" than usual. On average I get about 5 more mpg than her, just because of how I drive!!

Auto or stick shift? 132 or 150 hp engine? My 5 speed gave me 40 mpg on the highway.

Auto, and 132. From the factory it was rated at 30 mpg city and 40 hwy, but I was talking to a friend who said the one he had was getting 32 city and 37 hwy. If I'm in the 30's I'll be happy.

Simply drive the thing!! Keep it maintained properly and drive it! Honestly, if you're so worried about saving a few cents, sell the car and take the bus. You won't spend money on insurance, fuel, repairs. You won't lose on depreciation etc.
