I don’t know if it’s a reflection or what, but in the pic with the head standing on its end...... the ex valve on top has a shiny ring around the perimeter(like the carbon is cleaned off the outer portion) ...... which looks like light contact.

Look at the ex valve pocket of the corresponding piston very carefully.

Here’s a pic of what I think I’m seeing on your ex valve:
The clean ring at the OD is from light contact.
The reason it’s all the way around is the valve is rotating.

Thanks Dwayne! Only pulled one piston due to anxiety and called it a night. I still have many questions to be answered My gut says I washed the rings.

Is that ring on the OD the carbon cleaned off?

Also, what’s this mark in the intake pocket?

I just looked close at those photos in full size and it is hard to tell if it's a witness mark or reflection.I will take a close look tomorrow. Thank you!

Pulled the engine out a few weeks ago and disassembled as time would allow.Looked close as the valves and piston pockets,,,,,Everything looked very good. I was bothered by the oil film in the combustion chambers.Turned out I had installed the 2nd ring upsidedown.
Rod bearings looked good,popped a few main caps including the thrust and they were fine.Checked end play before taking the caps off,good.....
Last Tuesday started cleaning for reassembly,found a broken inner spring and 4 roller lifters that felt like ****.I had these lifters rebuilt under 2 years ago when I torched a piston.Wed I overnighted the lifters and bought a set of rod bearings because they chebby bearings are cheap. The lifters came in on Friday and we reassembled the short block and replaced the inner spring,also advanced the cam to 5 *.Checked the spring pressure and it was 230# on the seat and 648# at .650 lift.
I still have to install the intake manifold and water pump and drop it,,,hopefully tomorrow.Should have it running Tues night.That will leave me Tuesday night and Wed to test drive it before loading for Carlisle

how far down the threads (on the plug) does the discoloration go ?
can't tell really well, looks a tad bit rich, I can't see down inside
but IMO that's not abnormal for blown gas (gas in general)
especially if you idle around a bit
especially if you didn't click it off clean, right after the speed traps,
for an accurate plug reading

what did it tell you ?
did you do anything with the timing ?
where you at now ?
can you change when it comes in ?
or take timing out down track, run more initial ?

kept getting faster as boost was added
that's a good thing, it liked it I say do more

I have 2 threads black which is good but not the change in color of the strap on the plug.
Will buy a hole saw to separate the plug so I can see the bottom of the porcelain.

Comp roller mid .600 lift with 350# of pressure over the nose.

Just noticed this mistake,it's .640 lift with 650# over the nose. 230# on the seat.
Dwayne,we need to talk about a cam change with new springs for this winter

Damn! That seems like a lot of pressure compressed, or is that standard fare with that kind of lift?
On a cam with say .600 lift and a RB with a 6,200 RPM redline, would a flat tappet solid make sense?
Better yet, is it worth the steeper lobe ramps/roller profile to go solid roller on a 70% cruiser vs solid flat tappet?
I installed a CompCams hydraulic roller cam and lifters in my wife's 421 Tripower. That was before IQ52 aka Jim LaRoy said he would only use solid lifters (whether roller or flat tappet)
No problems with her engine, and the bore to stroke ratio of the 421 and the piston speed means a lower redline (5,800 IIRC) than a 440 can handle.

Dropped the engine in last night and put fire in the holes.Fixing up the headers was a big challenge! I need to make a new set this winter.Will road test it later and start packing for Carlisle
