Shop called, my old exhaust system is too far gone (cut and welded too many times) to convert from factory to headers so we are ordering a 3" Magnaflow with crossover. I'm getting a complete system with X pipe for only a few bills more than they wanted to weld a pipe to my existing system.

It's a known fact that a pressure wave builds up in the system at a specific RPM and engine tuning combo, so increasing the diameter of the pipe at that point (or adding a crossover) will help scavenging.
Exactly, it is not a matter of evening out between L &R, but of creating a longer pipe segment in the exhaust that is tuned to resonate at a lower RPM range and help exhaust scavenging on the lower end. You can create a similar thing by using long, large diameter collectors to terminate your header tubes.

440, hedman headers, 2.5" pipes, no X or H pipe, either will make the exhaust quieter.
