Hey guys I have a 440 freshly rebuilt the entire motor i put je pistons 10.5 - 1 compression 440 source stealth heads malory unilite distributor comp cam hot street application. my problem is this i have a speed demon 750 vac sec elct choke and i am having a hell of a time getting a nice idel it idles way hi then after a couple seconds it smooths down to a stall this is while its in park if i put it in gear it stalls. i have read some online guides to tuning one of these and no help any tips or anything on the carb has the ez idle adjust under the stud for the air cleaner. thanks for the help guys

Use a vacuum gauge, connect to a full vacuum port, set your timing and your four corner idle screws to give you the highest vacuum reading you can achieve . You will have to lower your idle rpm as you do this. just be patientand you will get it. Bob

Remove the carb and check the gasket impression on both sides. It's possible you have a vacuum leak.

Once you've followed the other advice here, if that doesn't work, the other thing you may want to check is the power valve. If it's blown (due to a backfire), it will not idle and create a similar condition to what you've described.

check this...

If the throttle blades are open too much, as in...iding on the main circuit, the power valve if not the proper rating [2'' below manifold vac reading @idle in gear for M/T and half the reading for /AT] could be opening and cause a overly rich idle condition.

fwiw, the 2 corner idle setup with a big lumpy cam is a poor match.jmo

Now knowing that..have you considered that you are not running enough initial timing in order to get the idle rpm high enough allowing you to close the throttle blade some so you avoid idling off the main circuit?
